For those mildly interested third-parties: I once offered a free membership to anyone who could find my challenge entry and comment on it with the word "persimmon" in their comment. JP offered the same a bit later and my 2006 membership fee was paid by that challenge :P

I'm stunned!
My pic is getting better votes than I thought it would.....and one comment which was a fairly sound thrashing.
I guess I'd like to put my $0.02 US into the fray on my voting attitude.
To me, I go with what inspires and/or moves me.
It's just truly visceral.
It's a given that the ones I vote on are going to be ones that have met the challenge.
I really don't low vote anyone, because I feel that pretty much anyone who submitted a pic has to be happy with it themselves or they wouldn't have submitted it.
So if I don't like it or I don't feel it's good, or doesn't meet the challenge, I generally don't vote on it.
It's not too hard for me to find that out of the 20% voting that I have to do to validate my voting, there are very few less than a 6.
And the ones that really wow me, they just get 10s.
I know from over 30 years of taking pictures as a recreational hack photographer how infrequently really great shots happen.
Those ones that really get me I make sure to vote....and comment if they do it totally.

| ok, this is driving be bonkers. im around a 4.9 right now, and i continue to drop. that means im getting a fair number of 4s and less. now, to me, there is something clearly wrong with a 4. i know im biased, but technically speaking, theres nothing wrong with my photo. i only have one comment out of 101 votes, and that comment is positive. how am i supposed to know what the problem is? this challenge is really getting to me...whats wrong with my entry??? |

What's wrong with it is a majority of people think it is a below average photo. That's it. It's a challenge, so the expectation should be getting opinions not technical review.
Not being smart, that's just the way it is. If you want some technical insight and you don't get any via comment challenges, post the shot in the forum after the voting is done and ask for some commentary there. people will be forthcoming, guaranteed. |

It's only day one on a challenge with a massive amount of entries. Right now, people are likely more concerned with slogging through the voting and less with commenting. Commenting on such a large challenge can be overwhelming. If you still have no comments by the end of the week, then you'll have more reason to be irked.

| i know... its not so much the lack of comments, its the slew of 4s and lower i keep getting. i normally wouldnt be upset about that, but I honestly feel that this is my best entry yet, yet its doing so poorly. i guess im just taking it too personally (although im trying not to let it influence my voting) |

I don't wonder if they go out and kick puppies after crapping on a perfect photo like this.

I really can't understand this voting methodology. You're not the only person that I've seen in the forums say that they do this.
To me, it just defeats the entire point of the voting process if you only vote photos you like upwards.
By not voting on a photo you don't like, you are effectively giving it its average vote, which could be higher than you actually think it should have.
It's like saying that you're happy for an average or poor photo to win, and you'd rather that then "offend" the sensibilities of someone who a) entered the challenge knowing what to expect and b) won't know what vote you gave anyway. |

If everyone do this, IMO, all photos will have a very high average.
Next time I'd love to have an average of 9.5 with only two votes (9 and 10). I think this will be a perfect score for my ego!!!!
Personally i try to vote for every entry on the challenge and only comment those with the highest (8,9,10) and the lowest (1,2,3) score.
