So it sounds like Ithaca is okay for 10/14.
Any suggestions for 10/28? Anyone still interested in attending 10/28? Most of the leaves will probably be past peak and/or gone by that point.
Pitsaman & cresus - Which day(s) are you planning to attend, if any?

I'm still hoping to join you on 10/28. Not sure where we should go though. |

Well, I'm in Ithaca so I'll be here in any case. I'll try and come out for all of them.

Ithaca on the 14th sounds good.
I'm still planning on making the 28th. The foliage may be gone then, but I'm sure we can find something to shoot.

The 28th is beginning to look very promising for me!

Yay!
Yes, there is plenty to shoot even if the leaves are gone. For 10/28 I'd rather not do Ithaca again...unless there's a huge demand to do it twice.
Other ideas?

Watkin's Glen may still be open on the 28th, that might be a fun destination. Among others, Taughannock Falls State Pa and Buttermilk Falls State Park are nearby, too. Not sure what everyone wants to shoot, but from just the three of these, I'm sure we could stay busy with landscapes/nature.
There's also Cornell University, which is could be interesting to shoot. Some neat older architecture, up in a hill overlooking the city.
Anyone else have ideas? Aside from Watkin's Glen, I haven't been to any of these places, and am just going by what I see on the Net.

Don't forget Ithaca falls and Treman State Park. |

Watkins Glen's gorge is very nice and there are at least four other large falls within 5 miles of the gorge (Aunt Sarah's, Chequaga, Havana Glen, Excelsior...)
We may be able to do Taughannock and Buttermilk on 10/14 while in Ithaca. At last year's outing they started at Cayuga Lake, stopped at the base of Buttermilk, did all of Robert H. Treman, and then on to the lower Taughannock hike. It was a very good day.
Other areas in Ithaca that I like are:
Cascadilla Creek/Gorge
Fall Creek
Beebe Lake (has a cool old powerhouse)
The Plantations
Lick Brook (...but is an immediate and continuous vertical hike...as in, when we hiked down last time, we were grabbing trees so as not to fall. Very steep.)
Places in/around Ithaca I haven't been to but hear/have seen are nice:
Six Mile Creek
Upper Buttermilk
Sapsucker Woods
Cornell has lots of great architecture. A few of us did a night shoot last spring and that was fun as well.

Sapsucker Woods is lovely. That's where we met for the GTG in February.

I would like to propose meeting at Buttermilk Falls at 8:00am. It's on the main drag and would probably be easiest to find for the out-of-towners. I know some of you have to add in a significant amount of travel time so if you need to come later that would be fine. Several of us have cell numbers we can share.
Buttermilk is right on Rt. 13 (a.k.a. South Meadow Street) at the southern end of the city of Ithaca. You will see signs. If you are driving on Rt. 13 north, it will be on your right hand side and on your left if you are traveling Rt. 13 south (duh!). :-)
See bottom right map for location.

Edit: After we meet we can decide, as a group, where we'd like to go next. It's easier than being tied to a schedule.

One of the others just wrote me and said they would like to be there much earlier than 8:00am. If everyone wants to meet earlier that would be fine with me. We could have an 'early crowd' and a 'late crowd'. There's plenty to keep us busy.

Maybe we can plan on a meeting point for the Late Crowd to join up with the rest? Say at lunch, around noon? I know that I won't be able to make it much before then.

Is that what time you get up? ;-)
I'm guessing most will meet up sometime in the morning(?), but I just sent you my cell number via PM so you can call us when you get to town. Will you have a cell with you?

Haha, no, I'll be up well before that. BU is hosting a nature photography seminar Wed night, and a concurrent field outing Sat morning from 7 to 10. As soon as it's over, I'm heading right to Ithaca. I realized it was the same day when I signed up, but couldn't pass up the chance.
I figure I can make Ithaca by 1130 or 12. I'll have my cell, and I'll PM my number to you before then. I'm okay meeting you anywhere, although if I had a few ideas where, it'd be better, as that way I could get some maps printed out. Let's just say that I'm not the best navigator on the ground (I still get lost in my home town, after 20 years) :-)

The crew race this saturday was moved and now I have permission to go.
Just have to figure out some logistics--whether to brave the three hour drive by waking up at 5 am or whether to stay somewhere along the way so I don't have to get up so early (and be tired driving 3 hours home).
Was there a good inexpensive hotel recommendation west of Ithaca off the thruway?
Please email me cell phone contact numbers!

Nikolai, I sent you a PM.
I booked a room at the Cortland, Hampton Inn, includes breakfast.
So I guess I'm coming! What's the foliage like there now? Starting to get better here in Albany area. Not peak but nice in spots.

The leaves are peak or near peak up on the hills, but not that far along down by the lake or in the valleys. I wish I could join you guys this Saturday, but unfortunately that's not going to happen. |

I'll be driving in on Friday and staying over for 2 nights. I'll be in Cortland, Hampton Inn.
Neil: We'll have breakfast but I booked a separate room because my girl is coming too.
Fall colors here I come!!!

We'll be thinking about you during the Wisconsin GTG. I lived in Syracuse for 3 years (87-90) and I miss the beauty and rolling hills of the Ithaca area. Have a blast! |

Great! Glad you are coming Neil and Nikolai! We should have a good size group!
I just updated the list on my first post. Let me know if I'm missing anyone!
