i take pictures at 1600x1200.. when cropping is neccesary, i do it by percentages i figure with calc.exe (90% crop == .9*1600 x .9*1200), then resize the result to 640x480. alternatively, you can use a ''''fixed size'''' selection box with the new dimensions and just paste into a new document.
this all in a cracked copy of photoshop 6, of course. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
- also any 640x480 jpeg at 85% compression, progressive or not, should fall somewhere under 150k.
- and! its also quite easy for asp to calculate an aspect ratio in a few milliseconds. lang is no fool.

Always take your photos in highest resolution available on the camera. That offers you the greatest flexibility in cropping...period.
If you plan on doing more than shooting snapshots invest in photoshop elements for $89 (if you don''t already have a high end version of photoshop or full paintshop pro).
That will be the best $89 ever spent just for the photo editing tools like auto cropping to constrained sizes.
I use the Photoshop LE version 5 that came with my Canon G2 and it is better than my full version of paintshop pro 6 for photo editing. Paintshop pro is slightly better on some of the painting tools and it also has a more realistic color representation to what I will see from my printer but photo editing is far better in Photoshop and their layers function seems easier to use as well.
And count me in for the 640 pixel max side and 150k max file size limit. Allows for much greater variety of expression.

Does elements support plug-ins ? I use Kai Power Tools Equaliser for sharpening as it has more control in a lot of cases.

It does support Photoshop format plugs!

I agree with hokie. Photoshop Elements for it's money is the best imaging program for photographers. The full version can do a lot more things but most of them aren't allowed here anyway (with some exceptions as GordonMcGregor mentioned) . Photoshop LE is a cut-down version of Photoshop 5.5. Elements is a cut-down version of Photoshop 6 that's optimized for photographers and has several features that would help new digital camera owners. Also, if you ever get serious about this stuff, the command structure you learned from Elements is almost directly transferable to the big Photoshop, so the learning curve is a lot less. |

I would vote for different sizes, also. Several times I have had to keep a part of my photo that I would normally want to leave out. I use Paint Shop Pro and it doesn't seem to be very easy to resize and crop the way I would like with these size restrictions. |

I also see no need for the aspect ratio restrictions. A 640-longside restruction would allow a lot more flexibility without taking away from the "pure" nature of the site. It certainly would have helped my entry this week.
As far as silly cropping dimensions, I wouldn't worry too much about that. It's not like having the restriction is preventing silly photos from being entered.

I would love to have the size restriction changed. I've only entered twice but each time forceing my frame to meet those dementions hurt the final composition.
Hokie, check out Paint Shop Pro 7. It has greatly improved it's photo editing section. Photoshop LE came with my Wacam but I've never used it. I tried last night but could not figure out how to convert the pds file back into jpeg and compress for uploading. ???? 'course I love what I know, but I'm getting no where with my kodak. poooh aelith |

Just a plug for corel photopaint. You can control the cropping with a fixed aspect ratio, you just resize the cropping area with the corner control handle and that fixes the aspect ratio. You can then reposition it after you resize. Photopaint is also substantially less expensive than photoshop, and you get a great vector drawing program with it (corel draw).
I've heard good things about the gimp as well, but havent used it extensively - but you cant beat the price. |

I use the gimp. It's hard to find places to download the windows version currently, but it's out there. Search on google, and if you get a german page, click on the translate link, because last time I downloaded it was from a german site.
To crop I use the crop tool, position it vaguely where I want it, look at the box that tells me how many pixels each side is, fire up a calculator, and multiply or divide one side by 1.33333 or 1.5 to get the right aspect ratio for either 640x480 or 640x427 (or their variants). Then I type that number into the box for the other side, move the frame if I need to, and crop. It's easy then to scale the image. Plus with the gimp you get all the functionality of levels adjustment, curves adjustment, colour balance, and despeckle, sharpen and unsharp mask filters without having to pay for/pirate one of the big applications. AND you get a slider when you save as jpeg that will tell you exactly what size in kilobytes your outputted file will be.
The gimp is the perfect application for dpchallenge users, really! It's free (in the GNU sense) and it does all the things people talk about here. The only thing I've read about here that the gimp doesn't do is adjusting the channels when converting to black and white, but you can decompose your image and layer the outputted files and use the sliders in the layers box to replicate that. I don't think that's against the rules (it better not be, I've used it several times now!) |

Same here--640 long side and 150k max. |

Just wanted to write a long essay how cool The Gimp is but then saw that lisae already did that ;-) I have Linux installed and use Gimp all the way because it's really the best program of that kind there. However, the Windows version can be found here.
I'm also in favor for allowing all image sizes up to 640 pixels on each side. Lately I wanted to crop something out on the left side but could not because the image would have been too small in height, cutting something else away. Sometimes the fixed ratio is limiting.

A thousand thanks JM :) This cut my edit time from hours last week to minutes this week! I'm going to have to dedicate some time to learning how to use my copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements.
