Cheer up Kosta.

We need to get our relatives and friends to vote also until they find a better way of handling it. It is obvious that this method of voting is not working.

Chin up and lets look for fresh ideas.

Tell me about it,when you see top quality photos getting 5-10 2's something is wrong with this site!

Kosta don't feel bad my photo when I first checked it with 2 votes was at an 8.5 I got excited, then came the next check 4 votes and a 7.0 now will 11 votes a 5.333. I really am fed up with the recent low scores on good photos.

Voters here seem to think if just one thing isn't in focus in the entire photo it is bad. Haven't they heard of Limited DOF? Geesh it was in unit one at NYIP. They think limited DOF is so good to learn the teach it from the very beginning. But don't do it here you will get comments like..."It's out of focus"

I generally vote in two rounds.

After going through the field and voting, I look a second time and adjust voting where I may have been too picky, not picky enough or just needed to let time give me a bit more perspective, I also do most of my commenting at this time. So maybe others have a similar process.

Just a thought. :)

Why is everyone so paranoid lately? Try to look at your photo objectively, and you will probably find that the score you get is the score you deserve. Anyway, 3 votes means nothing.

Not working why? Because some people don't like some photos?

How is this something wrong with the site? It seems to me like there's something wrong with the photo (in some peoples opinion).

I never did think my shot would do well on the voting here, though it was dissappointing to be proved right.

And I have a right to reply to your posts however I want :)

It seems to me that the people who start these types of threads have such big egos that they will never be able to understand that the photo which "should have done better" isn't all they think it is.

It's also insulting to the people who did vote your shot low (because they didnt think it was very good) that you accuse them of cheating, just because you can't see how they could possibly not like one of your photos.

Oh, and I never said you didn't have the right to complain or anything, I was just saying that I think it's a really dumb thing to do. You would maybe get a better response if you said something like:

"Hmm, I was expecting this shot to get a better score than it did, could anyone help me understand why it didn't?"

This would stop people from thinking that you were a bigoted individual, and would also help you improve your score next time.

Dumb guy does dumb things...
Thanks for the description...
I was just saying that IMO best my photo does poor and some of my "BAD" photos do much better, that is the part I don't get it ,maybe the Cultural difference is part of that!
Maybe some folks are to sensitive on planes getting too close to a building in last couple of years?

I agree with most of the sentiments here. I too am stuck on a 4.9 score in my 'Dreams and Nightmares' entry. What doesn't make sense is I receive wonderful comments asking me to tell how I accomplished this photo and they give me a 10, then I get a few with votes of 1 and 2, with some very rude comments letting me know in no uncertain terms that my photo is trash. Doesn't make sense how it can be so mixed. Nothing seems consistent.

It does not take a college graduate to see it is not working.

And with you being part of the admin and not seeing or understanding it maybe you should be considered part of the problem?

Or are you just trying to smooth it over because you are part of the admin?

Just my $0.02 worth.

Exactly what isn't working? That people don't receive the score they deem their photo deserves? It may be the best photo they have ever submitted, but it must be taken in the context of the challenge it has been entered for.

I have submitted some complete dross in the past and it has rightly been slaughtered by the voters, I have also submitted what I consider to be a good image only to realise that it pales in comparison with other entries.

Are some people so naive they think the majority of voters are wrong?
10/08/2003 09:29:18 PM · #20
I think the voting works as best it can. The only alternative would be a panel to do the voting, and I'd hate that.

There will always be people that you photo honestly doesn't work for, so they will score down. There are probably some morons who vote people down as a pathetic attempt to help theirs up the ladder (I have seen some amazing photos here that even if you hated the subject I can't see how it could possibly score below a 5, yet there is always a 1 there, which I can never understand and put down to a tiny mind).

I am glad the vote is anonymous .... but the comments are not. I always comment positively or to try and give what I consider is helpful advice. I might HATE a photo, but I am never going to say that. Sadly I see a lot of purely negative comments, not even attempting to do anythinbg but trash a photo, as Simplicity says.

Luckily those comments can be seen by author at least, which I am sure cuts back on potential slagging off.

What maybe pisses me off the most is when you see a destructive comment from someone and when you look at their profile, guess what .... they have no photos there and have never entered a challenge at all. It seems those people are brave enough to trash others, but too scared to risk their own work being seen. I needn't say how little respect I have for such petty people.

FYI, just to give you another point of view: the reason I stopped participating on dpchallenge was because not only was I getting scores that I didn't feel I deserved, but a commenter actually TOLD me in no uncertain terms that she was marking my photo low so that her somewhat similar shot would do better in the challenge.

If one person will say it directly to my face, I have to assume she's not unique in the world. SOME people on this site DO score photos low in order to raise their own ranking or just to troll. From this practice I get annoyed and learn nothing about my work. Therefore I no longer submit my work for judgement.

Just thought I'd mention my POV since some people who leave the challenges don't stick around to observe and comment. It's definitely an option, when you think the voting isn't particularly fair or accurate in many cases. Sometimes it's a true assessment of your photo, and sometimes it's based simply on trolling/cheating. My solution was to stop worrying about it and stop submitting altogether. It worked out great for me. I get my feedback elsewhere.

If someone admits to that, reporting them to the admin's will get them suspended from the site, as in the rules it states:

DPChallenge also monitors and enforces a strict policy against fraudulent accounts and 'ghost' ballots. Any attempts to alter the point totals in any way for any photograph will result in immediate loss of account and ban from the site. Photographs of any participating parties may also be removed from past or current challenges.

It's quite easy to see who did it to her - just look at her last challenge entry (trends) and you'll see the comment there. Actually, she also did it on ScottK's money shot.

Actually, mine wasn't the only "money"-themed photo to be marked down by that person for that reason.

I figure it's probably some little kid who doesn't really think about/care what her actions result in. I also know that although it was dumb of her to say it directly like that, she's probably not the only one who scores photos with their own ranking more in mind than that of the photo being judged.

I just decided it was easier to bow out than to get riled up, that's all. My point in posting was simply that yes, it does happen that way in the scoring sometimes. It's not ALL ego on the part of those complaining... not necessarily. :)

So, if she is doing this and it's obvious, why is she still here?

(I got one of her rude, lava lamp comments.)
