Ok, I have just discovered a new tool in pscs2, shadow/highlight. It looks like it has a lot of potential to help with things like under eye shadows and other pesky issues. The problem is I seem to lose contrast when I use it. Anyone regularly use this tool and able to offer some usability tips for it?

Try bumping up the midtone slider after you have set the shadows and highlights set.

I read somewhere that a good set of numbers to use is 30,20,30,30,20,30. I use them as a starting point and play with ethe sliders from there. Sometimes those are all I need.

I usually do another levels or curves layer after doing the shadow/highlight adjustment, seems to help a lot.

I know what you mean..but I used the filter for this image because I was trying to get a 60's retro-kind-of-feel without a lot of contrast...

That should also work as well as using selective color (adjusting the whites, neutrals, blacks). However typically, I only use the shadows part of the shadow/highlights tool to compensate for a lack of fill flash in the photo. That being the case I apply the effect only in areas where a fill flash would have been useful. If you're only doing that type of work you shouldn't be losing much contrast.

Try duplicating BG layer, applying exaggerated S/H to make the image much lighter and flatter than you want, set it to soft light mode, and fade the layer; that sometimes gives a nice effect.
