Just received this email:

Greetings!

I am James.s. Harry from London UK, I came across your profile after an effortless search for a professional photographer. We are relocating to my new house that I just buy in FLORIDA, USA, I mean I and my wife and children on September 21st 2006, but I will be celebrating my birthday on November 22nd 2006, So I want your service on my birthday November 22nd 2006.

My address which the birthday party will take place is below:

5024 Cape Romain Ct
Jacksonville, Florida
32277

That is my house address that I just buy and moving from London to in USA.

The birthday party will start 12pm to 4pm, so you can arrive the same day to our house if you like, or you can arrive at our house day b4 the party, just let me know which one you wish to do, but my house have adjacent rooms which you can stay in one of them if you like to come b4 the day of party. I invited 30 friends and that is all we are expecting on the day.

So let me know your charges rate for the party including the Airfare or your transportation amount, and let me know the amount all together, so I can arrange for the payment in time and you can be able to book the day for my Birthday Party.

I̢۪m attending a Conference here in Beijing China now so you can reach me on this mobile number +861060899829 Anytime from Monday to Sunday.

Thanks.

Not sure why, but this kinda freaks me out. Airfare? If he searched for me he knows I live in Jacksonville. Not sure how to respond.

usually they'd ask if you were interested first, instead of giving you every detail.

weird it is.

Don't respond at all, this sounds like a variation on a fairly well-known con.

Think I've heard of a birthday party photography 'scam' before. Someone will remember!

it would be fun if they mailed me, lol!

The following is an 'e-mail' I just received today. Sounds like another 'scam' in the making. Anyone else get this particular one?

he can't spell either:

"That is my house address that I just buy and moving from London to in USA. "

Hehe... obvious 'scam'. Even if it weren't obvious, someone moving from London would have a better grasp of English.

Here's a summary of how the 'scam' works:

You're contacted by an individual residing in another country. They tell you that they will be in the UK on a certain date and want to book you.
You respond to the enquiry and they arrange to send to payment via bankers draft.
You receive the bankers draft (it may be for more than was arranged) and pay it in to your account.
If the draft was for more than arranged (a few hundred pounds), you're advised it was a mistake and are requested to transfer the overpayment back to their account. Or...
Just after you pay the draft in to your account, the scammer contacts you again to advise they've had to cancel and they request a refund.
After 7 days (the usual length of time it takes for a cheque to clear), you check your account and see the bankers draft has cleared so you transfer the money back to the scammer.
Several weeks later, your bank contacts you to advise the draft was fake. They reverse the credit to your account, leaving you several hundred pounds out of pocket.
Under no circumstance should you respond to these enquires - please delete and ignore them.

I'd just add -

Joke about messing these people around all you like, because they are con men and deserved to be flogged to the hills.

However, do *not* get involved in communications with them and hack them off, some of these people are into serious organised crime and wouldn't hesitate to painfully remove your spare limbs.

Likely, it originates from Nigeria... seems most of the 'net scams are coming from there.

LOL, 'scam' the scammer :-)

Don't just delete and ignore. You wouldn't ignore someone driving around the neighborhood enticing kids with candy to get them into a car just because yours wasn't dumb enough to fall for it.

African scammers they agree to your fare and then say they want to put extra money into your account and ask you to bring it with them.. I think.. Heres why i think so.. I recently tried selling my D2H from photographer.co.uk and I had endless amounts of mail about it saying they agree the price and condition (even though they never seen it) but they want to put 3000 pounds into my acount then send a courier to collect the cam and can i please give the guy the extra money... LAUGH? I nearly paid the rent.. 'SCAM' avoid it or call the guy, I bet he's african

edited to add. the use of english is very familiar. I emailed one back and said please call my mobile to confirm your interest.. of cause i never got that call.

If you really care, you can contact the owners of the property and tell them that their address is being used for a 'scam'.

I'll PM their name and # to you.
10/02/2006 01:43:06 PM · #20
Mapquest the address, or go to the tax records - I did, and neither would support this as being anything but a 'scam'.

419 Eater is mostly about the 419 'scam' but they sometimes have others. It's pretty funny to read the extent that the scammers will go to in order to get the money.

Cookie cutter house in what appears to be a new development ... would be a good place to use in a 'scam'.
10/02/2006 01:58:00 PM · #23
there are so many scams like this going around the internet now.... especially by email and ebay you just have to be very careful

geese the spelling and grammar by that 'scam' lol..

ebay is famous for the nigeria scams... telling you the seller that the buyer will send the payment through paypal and then you ship your item and supply a shipping number and he will then make the money transfer and the shipping address is in nigeria....

is it possible for you to put down the mime details of this email if yes then you can possibly track down the source of this email and figure it out whether the sender is in the USA or some where out. though it might not always be true because if they are jumping through the hops then it would be tough.

Well, the phone number is in China (86 country code) so this guy/girl may not be african after all. Nigeria is infamous, but not the only place in the world that does this kind of stuff...

By the way, they probably get the money from someone - if they were to invest some of it in english grammar classes, it would have been somewhat harder to smell the 'scam'.

Then again, if people on the receiving side had all taken their grammar lessons seriously...
