I am going to be in NYC on Friday with my family to see a play (Wicked, matinee). I was debating whether to bring my SLR along to shoot the city, but will they let me bring my camera bag into the theater? I would hate to leave it in the car (though I'm not sure whether we're driving into the city or using the train system so the car may be moot; but in that case, I'll have nowhere to put it!)

I don't know if I'll even have time to take pictures, but I rarely go to NYC so it would be nice to at least have the camera along!

Appreciate any advice from those knowing the rules in Broadway theaters about bags and cameras!

I'd call the theatre where Wicked is going to be seen and explain your situation and ask what their policy is directly... at least then you know exactly what you are dealing with..and i'd be hard pressed to not have my camera in NYC... that'd just be all kinds of wrong :) .

Have a great time.. I'm seeing Wicked in Toronto on the 29th :)

How big is your bag? I don't believe they check pocketbooks or small backpacks, so you can stash your camera in that. But don't whip it out in the actual theatre itself, because they'll escort you out immediately. I've wrapped mine in a sweater once, but that was pre 9/11. So I don't know if you can go by that.

My SLR bag isn't big, but it does look like a camera bag. I could certainly carry a smaller one, but what would I do if they won't let me bring it in? I guess I could just carry my S1, it's small enough to fit in my jacket pocket. But unfortunately, it will limit my photography in NYC! (But I'll probably only be able to snap a couple of quick ones there anyway.)

It's not like there won't be cameras in the theater, with everyone and their brother carrying camera phones.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
