Don't do anything to the Hard Drive. Get another drive install Get Data Back slave the crashed drive and see if you can recover your files with the software in the link above. It has worked like a charm for me. There are data recovery services as well. So sorry to hear of the crash. Good luck.

Is there a way to get data back from a hard drive after it was replaced with a different hard drive, and can it be done inexpensively? My son's hard drive crashed a couple weeks ago, and he was told it would cost a lot to maybe retrieve the data.

If you have the old Drive still and nothing has been done to it then yes there is a good chance to save the data. Just slave the old drive and run the software Get Data Back. If the drive has been fomated then the data is gone.
ETA: The software is $80 usd so that's not to expensive.

Thanks a BIG bunch! I will check with my son to see if he still has the drive.
How do you "slave a drive"? Is that difficult? |

No its not you just plug it into the motherboard and set the jumper to slave. It will show up as the d: drive. Or if there are more than one drive in the computer the drive letter might be different. But that is about it. :-) |

This is easy to do, it is a little switch on the harddrive called a jumper. It slides onto different pins to configure the drive. As a slave it will not be booted from. You run the software (Get Data back) off the new drive. If the drive is SATA and not PATA it will be slave to a master IDE drive anyway. SATA means Serial ATA the older Parallel ATA has big wide ribbon cables with two plugs each, for a master and slave harddrive. The newer SATA has much finer cabling with only one plug per cable for a hard disk. SATA have no switches for slave or master, they are all master.
I am currently experiancing my fifth HDD failure, oh boy, oh joy!

Five minutes to go and I've inched up a bit. Hopefully, it won't fall too much when the "less than 20% voters" fall out.
Currently, this would be my next-to-highest score!

I'm hoping all the 'this is perspective not diagonal' morons drop like a rock when the scrubber rolls through. |

Yeah, noticed that score threads don't get started much anymore, and when they do very little posting goes on in them. |
