Seeing as it seems that quite a lot of voters take a literal, exacting, 'must contain xyz to fit' view of the Challenge Topic (and anything which is not a cliche shot is shot down in flames), lets have a 'Not a Cliche' Challenge.
Eg: 'Not a Cliche Group' Challenge - the shot should be of a group, composed to convey a sense of togetherness and companionship, but NOT in a cliched way! Maybe then the offbeat, creative entries would score.
Ah, but I suppose then we'd have arguments over what a cliche is, huh.

You're exactly right. In fact I'd also suggest having a "more than just a pretty picture" challenge sometimes, just because theres an excess of just postcard photos.
Or in fact, have a topic called "Ugliness" - see how people capture that and make it attractive!

I like the sound of ugliness. It would be a great challenge to make a beautiful photo out of something ugly. |

I think it would be fun to have a challenge where a topic is chosen and a list of things that may NOT be included in the photo is given. :)
For instance...
"Reflections" - Photograph your interpretation of "Reflections" but your photo may not include mirrored surfaces, glass, or water.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I thought the whining about clichés was over. Let's keep this in this thread then, ok. For a while it was overaking the forums, just like the anal retentiveliteralists are doing right now.

I really agree. What about considering photography as an art. Sometimes it seems that you must take a Stock photo to win. Perhaps there should be different Challenges for different categories:
Stock photos, Photography as an art, Photoshop photos, etc.
I think they can't be all in the same challenge because there are different things to evaluate.
And please... no more cats, dogs, children!!!! |

totally. it seems that a lot of the time the photos that win are the ones that are of the examples given in the description. when i see those examples i immediately scratch them off my list of things to photograph for the challenge out of respect for the sanctity of originality...

I still think that it`s much more difficult to professionally render a "cliched stock shot" than to submit a fuzzy-focussed, weirdly lit, strangely composed, funkadelic shot of grandma`s walker.
It takes lots of practice and quite of bit of photographic skill and knowledge to pull off these winning stock shots that some DPC members seem to despise. And let it be known that DPC members who consistently finish within the top 10 or top 20 with their awesome stock shots would still beat the pants off most of we lesser photographers even if challenges handed out by the Admins would be off-the-wall stuff such as "Ugly", "Nothing" or other such subjects. Skill is skill. Talent is talent. Imagination is imagination.
Great artists known for their ground-breaking work didn't start off that way. Monet didn't start Impressionism from day one. Picasso didn't start spewing (in a good way) cubism from the get go. Great artists were all classically trained before they went off on to other, greater things. That`s how I see DPC: it's a place for a photo newbie like myself to expand my basic (stock) photographic and image altering skills. With this is mind, it is my humble opinion that every photographer has to learn the basics, much of which is strongly linked to stock photography, to become proficient enough to render professional experimental images later on.
Another thing to remember when submitting to this site is that an overwhelming majority of submitting and voting members favour stock-type shots. With this in mind, don't expect high scores and favourable comments or reviews if you submit shots that stray too far away from this subject matter. If your thing is submitting "artsy" shots that, as you believe, most of us "don't get" well... that's what you do. I then suggest that you submit your photos for yourself or your self-growth or whatever... and don't pay too much attention to the comments and scores you receive. Because, according to some, we don't know "art" when it's staring us straight in the face, right? Validation deprivation can be a real b*tch... something I have learned to live with over the years. That's just a part of life.
Oh yeah. And the really well executed experimental shots get the rewards they deserve. I don't have the time to go looking for them, but I have seem some nice ones since I joined back in August of this year.

I think it would be fun to do the oppisite. The cliche challenge.
A cat in the flowers with a baby near by with some mountains in the background. Or something like that.
I say that only half joking. I think it would be interesting. |
