I have a 50mm 1.8 already. That's it. I want general purpose lenses. One must be a superwide angle lens. I have a Canon 30D. Right now I am leaning towards getting two lens:
Canon 24-70 f/2.8 and the Tokina 12-24 f/4.
I am going to Big Bend National Park in two weeks and possibly England 4-5 months from now. What would you guys do? Do you like my choices? What would you change? I'm looking for ideas of what I might do differently.

I'd get a 300-400mm lens.

I'd get the Canon 10-22 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the 70-200f4L.
That'll give you plenty of range, while still giving you a f2.8 lens as a walkaround. |

I have the Tok 12-24 and it's a great lens, but I'd also consider the Canon 10-22 if I were buying now (that I have my 30D).
The Canon 24-70 2.8 is also another known solid performer. Yanko is right though, that you might want something with a bit more reach. Consider also the 70-200 f4. |

If you are going to Big Bend, get something wide. Real wide.
Did I mention wide angle ?
I'd consider the Canon 17-40 F4L, if you can't find anything wider.
I've shot with that a couple of times in Big Bend (with a 1.6x crop sensor and a 1.3x crop sensor) and both times wished I had something wider.

What Spazmo said, although I might substitute a Canon 70-300 IS for the 70-200 (just to have more reach). |

Do you want to shoot landscapes or wildlife at Big Bend? |

Not a whole lot of wildlife in Big Bend - at least not very visible. There are a lot of wild pigs that stink and a few mountain lions that are hard to spot, but there just aren't a lot of wild animals out in the desert. A few deer, snakes, spiders etc too.

There will be way more opportunity for landscapes I should think. I would enjoy shooting both though.
I have used the 17-40L and the 200L Canon offerings, and was very happy with both. I am selling those in order to switch up my outfit.

I think I have been convinced by this thread and a few conversations with my brother to go with Spazmo's recommendation. Still time to change my mind though...

I'd buy a 12 month membership to dpchallenge and spend the rest on booze, cigarettes and loose women.
But if I were you I'd get the Tokina 12-24mm f4.0. :)

Cuz 2 of em are what I have and the 10-22 is what I would have if it fit on my camera.
No soup for you! |

Puts (options to sell!) on the Dow Jones 30 Industrial electronic traded fund (symbol:DIA). I'd use the March options and a strike price of $115.00. |

Good choices!
I might choose the tokina 12-24 over the 10-22 and put the savings toward the canon 70-200 2.8 over the f4.
I have the 10-22 and used the 12-24 and I am not that impressed with the sharpness (focus accuracy perhaps_ of the 10-22, especially outdoors.
the 70-200 f4 is a nice lens, but the 2.8 is killer, fantastic for portraits and you can add a 1.4 or 2.0 TC for more range if needed (the f4 lens only allows the 1.4 tc). Its a tad heavier, but more useful.

No, it's an EF-S lens. The 10D, even though it has an APS-C sensor, is only compatible with EF mount lenses. Since I plan to upgrade to a 5D at some point, I'll stick with my Sigma 12-24 since it will cover the full 24mm x 36mm sensor. |
