re software: in time, you WILL want software for postprocessing, but don't rush into that yet. You need to learn the basics first, it will help you make the decision that is right for YOU.

For starters, download the free windows viewer, it shows the basic EXIF (your camera settings).

You will want to study those - not just to satisfy OUR curiosity, but because you can learn so much from them.

I do have Photoshop CS, and I'm quite fluent in manipulating images and such - but I've never tried it with photographs for things like red-eye removal and all the things I see people here have used. :)
Thanks a lot for the link, that's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for - I will see if I can't find that information on my images. :)

[edit: so now I've found aperture and shutter speed with that software. - but not ISO. Am I doing something wrong for that not to show up when I look at the info? Images taken a while back with my mum's camera tells me ISO...]

Nell,

Welcome to a hobby that may become an addiction - but a good one!

I'm relatively new here and my advice is to SEARCH the forums - think of a question you have and search - I have spent SO MUCH time here reading what the photographers I admire have to say.

For instance if you like one particularly photographers style - do a search on them and perhaps you'll find threads they've participated in and have answered the questions about their techniques that you have.

For me - it's been a REALLY HUGE learning curve to see the ASTONISHING talent on this site and ponder whether I'll ever have the time learn what they know.

The one thing that I ADORE about this place is that it seems that the photographers at the top of the ribbons never hesitate to reach out and help those of us further down the field.

The transparency in their sharing their techniques absolutely blows me away.

So I'm learning so much faster because the skilled photographers SHARE their knowledge willingly.

Once you've learnt the basics of picture taking you will need to learn about post processing - it really is what makes the BRILLIANT shots on here so BREATHTAKING!

I hope you enjoy your new camera - it's a very exciting time to be a photographer - I cannot imagine ever being able to learn what I have without the internet - GRIN!

My ISO info shows up, and you already worked out that your Mum's camera shows it, too, so I guess at this point we'll have to blame your camera.

Does it make a difference if you set the ISO manually or to auto? Perhaps that's the solution.....

Hi Nell -

I'll echo the comments, about what a fun hobby this is, and what a great site DPC is.

I began with a similar camera to yours....I have one particular bit of advice for you.......learn how the focus lock and exposure lock work. With the lack of manual settings, those are crucial.

Now, if I can just get time to getting round to renewing my membership, and actually just get out there, and take some photos, and enter challenges!

hey
sorry for asking dumb questions, but I'm trying to learn how to use my new ixus 65 too..
I can't control the shutter speeds below 1"3 manually, and I'm wondering why. (can't find it in the user guide either).
Is it because; the camera settings definitly will be betther than mine? the camera is cheap? or should it be possible?

best regards

Thor
