I've finally gotten around to surfing (and posting) to DPC Prints, and I would like to know your opinions about shots that have a border with title and artist information. Does having this extra stuff as part of the photo detract people from buying?

Personally, I think if I were buying a photo to frame, I'd rather have it without. If anything, I much prefer a subtle notation on the mat of the print rather than part of the print itself. That's my opinion. I've also seen a number of prints that I would like to purchase, but don't care for the font or the size of the border, etc. That's disappointing.

I'm trying to decide if spending the time to create borders and title text is worth it, or if it's just going to end up hurting me in the end. I've done a couple, but now I just don't know. What do you think?

For review within a challenge, I generally like photo's to have a border, as it simulates a frame or matte.

For purchase, I definately prefer prints without borders, as that is what the frame and matte that I choose, will do. I do expect an artist's signature.

I put on the border to allow me to crop to the size and shape I really want; I then "fill-out" the canvas to the next larger print size.

I've been trying to put the title and copyright info far enough away that people can cover it and still leave a border. They can also crop off or cover the border if they don't like it. But I think not everyone will necessarily frame the photos.

I am relativey new to this site but I like what I have seen so far.

Since you were talking about the DPC prints, I have a question. Are you selling any pictures there? Is it worth it to put some photos there?

No. (but go ahead and buy one if you want!)
Yes. Because ...

1) You will probably try and print/sell the photos sometime, somewhere, so this is a good time to learn the file preparation techniques.

2) DPC Prints has received pretty uniformly rave reviews for quality, so it's the "best" place to make your own prints.

3) You may sell a print, in which case you've made money with no additional effort, and gotten a heckuva ego boost to boot.

4) You will generate additional traffic to the site, which will be of benefit to everyone, and may cop you a referral commission as a bonus.

5) You will get to enter twice as many challenges as a paid member ... currently DPC Prints is a "perk" of membership, not a standalone gallery.

6) [please continue -- I gotta go to work]

There isn't much harm in having a small border with a title and copyright info in my opinion.

Consider an 8x10 print with a 1/4" border all the way around. A typical mat opening for an 8x10 is 7.5" x 9.5", which means the border on the print would be totally covered. The reason the mat opening is always smaller than the print is so that the mat can be attached to the photo -- if the opening was exactly 8x10, the print would just "fall through" the mat opening.

As I mentioned yesterday, I try to include information about the "actual image area" in my print descriptions to make it obvious to somebody who views the print that the border/title/copyright can easily be covered if that is what they prefer. (You can see an example here.)

Thanks, Eddy! That's an excellent solution.

There are a number of people who have some images online that are squeezed out by gigantic borders and type. I am buying a photograph, not a poster! If they kept it to a minimum maybe I would like it better.

Oh well...to each their own.

If it is priced like a poster and you like it, why wouldn't you buy it? Some people do like "posters," and I see no harm in offering one with true photographic quality instead of offset printing (which I could never afford anyway).

As one of the large borderers, I do it because it's easier to create acceptable aspect ratios and crops, it IS a poster of sorts, and if you want a photograph, you are as capable as a lot of us of recreating most of the shots we put online. What you're buying is someone's presentation of their idea.
