Nope, didn't think so. Actually I'm quite happy with the way things are going... If it hangs in there at that score it will be my highest ever. :-)
I just wish there were more comments: 7 from 163 votes.
That could be a good thing though. I usually get lots of comments when I've done something wrong... |

Ok. . .I dared not speak so as not to jinx my photo. . .but I am actually amazed at mine. I woke up yesterday morning and was afraid to look -- because I feared it was going to get beat up to a slow bloody death. . . .it's not technically perfect for sure.
But lo and behold, it started out at 6.6, and it has inched up ever since. Yesterday, it jumped back and forth from 6.9 - 7.00000. Now it's at 7.07. It's still early, and I have many times had photos nosedive. . . butttttttttttttt. . ..sheeeeeeeesh. I'm actually hoping against hope that this one is going to be the greatest surprise of my dpc history and end up as one of my new highest rated photos!!!!
I do love the photo. . .and I am so proud of the voters for seeing beyond technical perfection tho :)

I agree with .. uh someone, I forgot who.., I would like more comments. But since this is my first submission in a challenge here I'm just happy I'm still hanging above 6! And in case someone remembers me after the voting is over, I like comments... even if they say my work is horrible. How will I know if no-one bothers to tell me? ;) |

After months of watching Open Challenges I finally decided to get in on the action. So about 8:00pm on the last day for submission I started taking shots. Next morning started voting and knew right away, my photo didn't compare with the talent of the other photo's. But, oh well had fun taking the shot and ended up with something completely different then what I set out to capture.
The comments were really helpful, thanks to all who made one.
I am now offical member, hopefully the shots will improve but still happy with the average rating for my first rushed shot. No excuses next week.
Can anyone recommend a decent lighting source?

You've got 10 comments, that's 9 more than a lot of people will get in this challenge, you're doing well!

Definitely a "love it" or "hate it" thing. I am sort of taken aback by some of the comments, but I guess at least there ARE people commenting so I shouldn't complain. ;) |

Not inspiring a lot of strong feelings, it seems. Still, disappointing to have my third challenge continue the downward trend that started with my second (my first cleared 6 and was my highest entry of the three so far).
Looking forward to seeing everyone's entries (especially those of you chasing ribbons).

I am yet to solve this puzzle. Got just got 2 comments, if i assume that the picture is not good then it should not be rated at 5.6? How should i interpret this!!!

Your story seems to be similar to mine- my first challenge score was 6.04 then its has come down to 5.14 by the 4th challenge. I think we all have to unlearn before learning here

To me the 5.6 means (much as mine, it seems, though currently at 5.45) that most people are rating it 5 or 6, and people seem to comment least on these "average" images (I know I do; I comment from the bottom up, and really haven't gotten to the middle for comments, even on this smallish challenge). For me, they're also the hardest to comment on - they're okay, but they don't inspire me to say one thing or another.

My only worry is what it is that we're "unlearning"; it could be that we're unlearning good photography and learning what to do to "win" here, but not really learning much more than what the voters want to see. I'm not sure how representative voters here are in terms of other opinions outside of this "place". I'll need more experience before I can say (and before I decide whether to pay to join or not).
Enough for now, back to the score watching.
Best of luck!

There is some of that for sure -- learning to please the voting crowd, but in doing that, I think you really learn alot that makes your photography better: i.e., you learn to pay attention to the little things that you learn really bug them, like "not sharp enough", tilted horizons, too much (or too little) processing, "wow factor". And when you think about it -- that's what photographers do with their work anyway is use their own artistic expression to either sell ther work, or please somebody with it.
My vote: join and learn :) You do beautiful work by the way from what I saw in your portfolio! Good luck!

Up a little bit this morning - yeaaa! :P
*From my last post...clarifying that I put more effort into my shot for this challenge than others I'VE done...not other photographers! Sheezzz, photographers at DPC put in more effort & creativity than I would have ever imagined!* |

Thanks, Sandy, I'm still thinking about it, but I appreciate the encouragement and kind words. I know I can improve, but it's difficult if all I get is stuck in the middle with few really helpful comments. But in any event, I'm sticking around a bit to see how things shake out, and this challenge is part of that. We'll see how everything goes over the next few weeks, and I'll go from there.
Thanks again!
