That would be the great Melting Pot that is America, I guess. ;-P |
I like to consider DPC as much a melting pot as America. We all have enough things we find in common to avoid arguing about the things we don't. |

I will have to withdraw from this site as it is not avaiable in Eskimo (aka Inuit). Sure I can't speak that language but some people do and we are discriminating against them...
C'mon all DP challenges are restrictive in some way. This site is in English which means all participants can either read English themselves or have access to some sort of translation... so whats the problem with using Dr Suess's books in one challenge?

Which comment? "We'll miss ya"? Well, someone probably would. It was a bit sarcastic, but I didn't feel like getting into this argument about how a challenge shouldn't be this way or that way so as not to exclude anyone. But now that I have a little time... All challenges potentially exclude lots of people who are not familiar with the topic: Pink Floyd, Ansel Adams, Gary Larsen, James Bond, Waldo, stdavidson, etc. Those are just the person related challenge topics we have had in the past - and not all of them are American personalities and most of them are lesser known than Dr. Seuess.
Then there are the other types of challenges where many non-American members may be at a disadvantage with the voters: Cliche, Visual Puns, Movies, Literalisms, and more. Yet we still had those challenges. What about excluding people who are technically challenged and don't know what "Bokeh" is or how to achieve it? What about a "Country Life" challenge for people who live in the city?? Or vice-versa? The point is that many challenges potentially exclude some members who don't understand the topic and don't want to research it. None of it has to do with being America-centric - you just choose to pick the challenges that you claim are, so you can whine specifically about that.
I don't recall reading anything in the agreement that says I am entitled to have all challenges tailored to my knowledge, experience, equipment, perception, etc. There are always plenty of challenges running concurrently so if you see a topic you don't understand, either research it or enter a different one or don't enter one - whatever.
As for the comment I made - if someone essentially threatens to leave because they feel excluded from a challenge for lack of familiarity with the topic, THAT is childish, IMO.
I say YES to Dr. Seuss. Now I'm off to post some more challenge suggestions: Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Baseball, Stars & Stripes, and maybe a few more just to stir the pot. |
Thank you! Well put.
LOL. I was pretty new to the site when that stdavidson challenge occured and I was like... umm what?? And I looked at his profile and STILL didn't get it. LOL. And bokeh... oh my. My second entry and I totally misunderstud what it was and got hammered!
It's all about learning! |

I don't think you're being fair to pineapple, who btw contributes a LOT to DPC via his commenting. His complaint was not that this challenge was restrictive, but that too many challenges are America-centric. Are you saying it's impossible for too many challenges to be America-centric? If that's your stance say so. If not, then you should address his complaint specifically. If you disagree, then say so. It's simply a matter of where your tolerance is for America-centric challenges. Maybe some challenges are America-centric and Americans don't even realize it. Show some counterexamples. Challenges like James Bond and Pink Floyd are also well known to Americans, so they don't work as counterexamples.
I will fight for my or pineapple's right to complain about any challenge. Especially at this stage when a challenge is just being suggested. Each challenge should have a civil roster of people's opinions, not attempts to belittle and unfairly dismiss same.

p.s. I think Dr. Seuss is a literary God. My selfish American heart would love to see this challenge.

Sheesh. Say that white is white and someone will argue otherwise.
Seuss was American. So?
Typing "dr. seuss" into Google yields 1.8 million links.
I'd love to see a Dr. Seuss challenge, particularly in expert editing.
I'd also be interested to see all kinds of international and cross-cultural topics. Here's a list I came up with, typing them as fast as I can think 'em up:
- religion
- name a continent and shoot something representative of that country (this could be a series, one per continent)
- holiday other than Christmas or Easter
- Buddhism
- Martial arts
- foods not from your country
It's not hard. And it's still not a reason to shoot down some idea just because you haven't heard of it.
You know how I got my Pink Floyd entry? I thought of something I'd like to shoot, then I googled it along with the band's name and got lucky. I'd never heard of the song before that moment.
