I've wanted to buy Apple, however, the biggest obstical I see is software. I don't want to have to buy full versions of CS2, HomeSite, Flash 8, etc... It would cost thousands to switch!!

You'll definitely be able to do all the things on your list on either, for a similar price. If you are very comfortably on Windows then it'll take you a little while to learn how to do the same things efficiently on a Mac. So you need to weigh that against the major benefit of Macs: less downtime. The chance of getting a virus on a Mac is practically none (the reason you don't hear about Mac viruses is because there are practically none, ask any IT professional). Also, and equally important, when things go really wrong on a Windows computer, you often have to wipe the hard-drive and start all over. That almost never happens on a Mac, at worst you just reinstall the one misbehaving application. |
And if you believe all of the above, I have a Commodore C-64 that will run circles around a Mac that I will sell you.
LOL!
Mac's crash. Mac's get viruses. Mac's have to be reinstalled when they do crash. They might have less problems because of their design percentage wise, but that's because there are so few Mac's out there in comparison to Window's based computers. Less people use Mac's, hence less complaints to hear about.
I am a IT professional. And I disagree with you on your statement.

Well then, let's agree to disagree, and ask Google instead. Type in "viruses on mac" (without the quotes). Everything on the first page is about how few viruses there are on the Mac.
As for Macs having to be rebuilt to fix a software problem? It hasn't happened to me yet in 20 years of Mac usage, neither at home nor work. In the meantime, my coworkers who use Windows seem to average 1 to 2 complete rebuilds a year. I'm just reporting what I see... |

Except for one thing, Viruses don't attack chips, they attack OSs. Windows is the virus magnet, not the Intel chips. |

Apple has hardware/software protections in place to prevent that. There are hacks, but I wouldn't suggest it.

I used to put down mac all the time because I was a loyal windows guy and was way into gaming when I was younger. I bought my first mac about 4 months ago. A Macbook. I don't plan to ever purchase another PC. I am in love with the mac. Popup problems are a thing of the past, spyware? Nope, viruses? Nope. It just works and works well.
I cant say enough good things about mac.

ROFL! Your post may have been true in 1988. It isn't now. |
I'm not sure what you are saying... |
I'm saying that just about everything you stated is plain wrong. Aside from some games, all of the top applications are available as Mac versions. Given that all modern Macs can run Apple, Linux AND Windows software, there are obviously more applications available to Mac users than PC users. Windows Vista is just now catching up to the features of OS X from a year or two ago- IF your computer can run it. Unless you're buying low-end hardware, Apple computers are comparable and even cheaper than equivalent PCs.
Viruses? Ha! Aside from reported "proof of concept" bugs that Apple immediately patches, viruses, worms and spyware are simply non-existent on Macs. I've been hearing for years how OS X isn't really secure and that the viruses will come. Yeah, right. I'm still waiting, and Apple's market share is going up, not down as you seem to imply. As a company, Apple is about 30% larger than Dell.
PS- for any of you waiting for the next version of Photoshop or worried about the cost of switching... don't. A fully Intel-native PS3 is available right now as a beta, and switching licenses apparently involves little more than a phone call.

I did, thankyouverymuch. I priced out equivalent mid to high-end systems on both platform several times in the past year, and each time Apple was within $100 or cheaper than the PC. |

at risk of being flamed, both have their strengths and weaknesses although this has to be my favorite MAC Video of all time ;)
It mostly boils down to personal preference. Kinda like choosing between car manufacturers

Good idea ... Apple vs Windows. :D
---
The vast majority of all problems with any platform are caused by uninformed users -- not architecture. That's not going to change anytime soon.
Apple has finally wised up and figured out it was never going to be more than a niche market as long as it relied on proprietary hardware. If they continue on the path they are on, in a few years they will be nothing more than a brand name, like Dell, HP or Gateway.

Maybe this thread concept could become a challenge subject?
I don't know if the name brand thing would fly safely though. There could be some kind of corporate backlash about the trade names being used.
If you are on this site, you have some kind of computer experience.

There are numerous other articles (even an editor's choice at PCMAG) and as scalvert said you can just go to the sites and configure systems.
Also, I write this response as someone who has 5 PC desktop systems and 3 PC Laptop systems in his home... all running Windows XP (except two 2K systems)... so I'm not a Mac/Apple Geek.

!?! Effectively, the only thing that Apple has changed recently is to use an Intel processor. Be careful when you speak of proprietary. Much of what you think of as "standard" appeared on Apple hardware first and was adopted later on PCs: the mouse, laser printer, SCSI, USB, Firewire, Wi-Fi, DVD-R drives, trackpads, widescreen laptops... heck, Apple had dual monitor support 10 years before Windows! |

Mac has it's own quirks and frustrations, but for the most part I find them very nice. I like my ibook better than any other laptop I have ever owned. I don't like OSX as much as XP but much of that is from just being familiar with windows for so long. Little more money for the mac, but a little more quality on the build. Expect some issues, just different ones than you get with your PC. For personal use Macs are nice. |
