I was under the impression it could be full-length or even of a non-human such as the recent pet-portrait.

I always thought that a portrait was meant to convey the essence of it's subject, remembering Bears famous SP here.

However, I am prepared to admit that a portrait of an inanimate object would probably be called a still-life.

Still it amazes me every time I see the dnmc tag in my comments that the commenter does not think for one moment that despite the fact I am capable of operating a PC & a digital camera that I am incapable of understanding a simple challenge.

While it is certainly possible, I usually just assume the photog has found an interpretation that I haven't or can't see, in which case I may give a lower score, but I don't assume the submission is incorrect.

Just to answer you, before I submited the picture for example I googled the portrait word for the hell of it :)

by the way, you can quote somebody by just clicking the "quote" button. You don't have to copy and paste. See, you just learned something else today :)

Now, who is taking this personally? Me or the guys here doing the same thing I was talking about in the first post.

*love*

I must say that, no I don't understand your point. Nobody was attacking you...until you started attacking others. There was no way somebody could know that it was a nooB image during the challenge. And as for being a nooB, it appears you have been in challenges for almost 4 years now, in that time you could have entered hundreds of shots and gained a vast amount of information. Maybe you aren't taking it personally, but your tone is that of an extremely irate person, but I suppose it can be misinterpreted when you can't actually hear the person.

I know alllll about misunderstanding things around here. I was upset that I had missed the deadline for a challenge and immediately made a post asking people to tell me how they thought it would have done. Apparently people get very angry when you do things like that, but how could I have known that being a nooB? I realized I was (partially)at fault and I moved on. My point is to learn from this and not react with violent words, as it only leads to more vilolent words and sometimes actions.

Please don't call me violent, because I'm not. I have not cursed at anyone or called anyone bad names. I only called myself and asshole and I know someone is going to quote that line and be mean :)

And... DNMC means? These nifty 3-10 letter words mean?

DNMC is short-hand for Does Not Meet Challenge. People did not think it fitted into the topic for the particular challenge. Like many before and after me (and probably most of the people responding here) we have all had a photo we liked and wanted to get in into a challenge so people could enjoy it and tell us how good it was so we put it in- even if it did not fit the category. Sometimes a clever title tries to make it fit. But the voters do not like that. Some people will give a few points to a nice picture even if it does not meet the challenge but others will refuse to give higher than a one or two. Learning what the voters like is also part of the process- along with tryinig to learn what makes a good picture.

Think like a business or school. Would your client pay you for the photo if they asked for one in the category? Would the teacher give you a good grade on it? The voters are the client and teachers. If our homework is wrong, we get a bad grade or no money. And so you have learned something with this photo- just not what you set out to learn. Shoot for the audience. You can still try to do it in your own way of course.

As to the picture itself, it was helpful to me to know what you were trying to show. My first reaction was that it is too dark and that I would have liked to have seen more of the park below the buildings, but since you say it was about the noise and stress you found in the park, how you could not truely escape the city there, I now can look at it and see that the tall, opressive buildinga are encroaching on the park and the city is drowning out the green peacefulness of the park. Going with black and white also removed the blue of the sky and green of the park- again taking away what most people find peaceful in such areas. I did not have time to enter or vote on this challenge, but if I had, I probably have left you a comment similar to the ones you received.

Well, yes, I suppose they can. Though for here if you are going to take such an oblique angle on your shot, you may have helped yourself by calling the shot "portrait of a building" or something, just to give us poor, hapless folk who have no clue some idea of your intention.

In the wider scheme of things, I'm afraid that if you enter a shot here that people think does not meet the challenge, then you will probably get a lot of comments telling you as much. Consider yourself fortunate, some people just enter "bad" shots and don't get any comments explaining what they might do to fix it. At least you know for next time to provide a shot that fits more into the spirit of the challenge if you want a different type of comment.

I agree that it is a portrait of a City, This is the first time I have seen this picture..and if I would have voted the Challenge, I would have gotten the drift of it's meaning... out of the box photography is part of DPC also, and it is a shame that zeolite got caught up in the comment mill...there are some pictures I have taken over the years here that have the same comment over and over again..and it is hard to watch your picture go down in flames...But.. that being said...I could actually say that in my opinion...it met the Challenge..and remember that he did get 40 5 plus votes...so there are others that understood its meaning also... Pug-H expained it exactly... when Drew and Langdon put an N/A for the Challenge description..that does open up a slew of Ideas...at least it does for me...and I am willing to take a low score for creativity...

My picture that got bashed: Finished 152 out of 162 images. I thought (hoped) it fit the category. Voters thought otherwise. Now I am more careful.

Zeolite, don't feel too bad... Check out this photo - he got slammed DNMC even worse than you, and his score ended up being worse too.
To be honest though, it's one of the funniest DNMC's out there (I still find myself staring at it looking for a cow or a pail of milk, like one of those 'Where's Waldo?' photos)

I always thought that meant "In My Humble Opinion"? Maybe we're all so good here at DPC that we don't have to be humble... ;-)

DUDE!

I looked at your profile.

You've been here since May 2003.

You can't seriously expect anyone to believe that you didn't know exactly what you were doing when you entered that pic.

You were going for slipping through the cracks in the definition.

I know of what I speak!

I was going for slipping through the cracks of what was NOT said.

I had fun with the reaction!
