okay so my camera isnt exaclty top-notch and it only has the flash that came w/ it

but i find that when i take a portrait of somebody (not in a studio just spontanious) the subject appears to have distinct flash marks on the face

is there a dampener i can buy for my flash?

Not much you can do with the on camera flash.. try a piece of scotch tape over the flash lens maybe...

Wrap tissue round it or cut a slot in a white ping pong ball and slot that over your flash.

if the tissue is too thin, or doesn't diffuse enough, you can try a piece of a paper towel or napkin.

And if you want color casts, you can use colored napkins.

I'm not sure her picture really has anything to do with it...

I noticed either in the B&H catalog or online where you can get a diffuser made for onboard pop-up flashes. Sorry...don't have a link to it - but I know it was in the flash accessory area.

The ping-pong ball would probably be a lot cheaper. :D
