Heh. Thanks, Writeheart. I was baffled as to how Jack could think those were hippos. :)
Kelli, I think Noraneko nailed it. It's a perfectly nice shot of them, and the title is funny.
Your shot is a great example of where the image is the starting place, and the editing is the end game. If you want to get some specific examples, toss it out in a forum thread and invite others to process it. See what you get. Maybe you won't like any of them better, which is just fine. But maybe you'd get some ideas.
A lot of what I now do in terms of editing came about because of things like that, where people made suggestions on my shots in a thread.
Just always keep your own tastes in mind. No need to adhere to others' thoughts unless you agree yourself.
Now, Catherine, about your FS entry: amazing! Just a beautiful shot. :)

WOW Christian.
I thought Kelli's shot was pretty decent - but you really made it POP.

Yeah, I pulled up the wrong FS, lol. I have the moon pic uploaded now if you want to take a look...now returning to the regularly scheduled 'gators...

A fun thing to do (for me, anyway) is to look at pictures you scored high and see who else commented on the picture. I was very please in the Free Study to see bucket loving many of the same shots I loved. Melethia liked a few, too. My correlation with raish, on the other hand, seemed like a completely random sampling... hahahaha |

Very good point! But if we're on the subject of "want", I'd like to score my average from time to time. :-) |

Christian, oh hi goddess of all that's magical in Photoshop, can you elaborate a bit more on what you mean by the following two steps?
-muliply layer, masked with gradient set from white to grey
-multiply layer with gradient from white to black, for the slight vignette

Since Jack posted his recent moon shot, and I have nothing in voting right now, I figured I'd post mine.
It looks about as good as I can get with this camera.
But I have to say, this is one arena in which SLRs and other equipment really do beat any point and shoot. Here's what Mark Bond got using a telescope:

ok.
when you do a layer mask, you can change the tone of your 'paint' in the little colour boxes at the bottom. usually they're white and black, but you can change the colours by double clicking on whichever box you want to change. a colour pallette will come up,a nd you can choose whichever you want. for layer masks, only shades of grey really do anything. you can choose any colour you want, but it wont show, as it's masking, not actually baing part of the image!
for instance: in the croc shot, i just wanted a slight reduction in the multply effect, so i changed the black colur to a mid grey. this made the gradient effect (which uses both colours, unlike painting) muchmore subtle.
for the second layer, which was just on the edges of the shot really, i change it back so the centre of the gradient was not affected by the multiply layer at all.
in this image, i used a gradient adjustment layer (rather than a gradient mask on a multiply layer) to give the vignette. it's set to multiply. however, i used the colour picker to change the colour of the gradient from black to one of the blues in the image itself. for that i selected teh color picker (little eyedropper tool) and chose the area fo the blue i wanted on the pic. then i just did the gradient adjustment layer. so for here, the colour does become a part of the image.
i hope this makes sense.

I think I know what you're saying, but I'll have to play with it. For "gradient" I'm assuming you're choosing the centered gradient thingie and radiating it outward. I have a horrible time trying to "paint" to reduce that effect without it being obvious. But I'll try it and maybe post examples so you can tell me what it is I get and what I don't get. (The older I get, the slower I get.)
I put what I thought was a pretty good attempt at DPC friendly into the chains challenge. I apparently cannot do DPC friendly. I think I should stick to "underrated melethia" shots. I swear, if I had five bucks for every time I get that after a challenge I'd be set for Starbucks runs for a month or two. :-) |

centred gradient thingie it is! i had a horrid time trying to paint it out too. i just figured out i could change the tone of the gradient a little while ago - it certainly makes life easier.

I just want to thank TS members for their truly nice comments on my FS entry - getting compared with Ursula is a huge honor and I truly appreciate it. Funny thing - Deb thought it was Dr. Achoo's shot. When I entered it I actually was hoping people would not think of Achoo, as there was some contraversy surrounding one of his dandelion shots where he evidently stuck a seed away from the seedhead and made it look like it was blowing in the wind. Fine in my book, as Scalvertuses optical illusion to such advantage regularly and to much admiration. Getting compared with Achoo is also an honor as far as I'm concerned, and looks like my fear was for naught, as it ended up scoring just fine.
Again, thanks TS - love this place.
Last but not least, did anyone else notice Svetlana's stunning finish! Go silverfoxx!
Edit to add: Sandy P said it best - Silverfoxx is incapable of taking a bad photo. And she probably does look that stunning when she first wakes up. :-)

You can also change the tone, oppacity, flow and all sorts on the brush if you're painting out areas of a mask. Don't forget you can change the colour to white and paint it back in again, as well.

Thanks for all the feedback! That is exactly why I'll probably always be average (or below average) here. I just suck at the post processing. I get too caught up in the "is this legal?" to really attempt to try anything. If it's an image that's not for here, I experiment a bit more (and sometimes get fantastic results). I can't seem to look at something and say, hey what if I darken this and lighten this? Pretty much, I can see the picture, but can't bring it out because I really still don't understand how to! Frustrating!!
On a lighter note... Congrats to the new PB's noraneko and silverfoxx!

I'm in Chains with a shot that I LOVE!! So that's almost a guarantee of a poor score. It's one I constructed in my mind and then executed, rather that looking for something that fit the challenge. Currently it is at 4.4 with one positive comment. The commenter said he would put it in his favorites, but that didn't happen. :(
I've been having a great time working on the Night Shot. This is one of my goals for this year, so I've been working hard on it. One great side benefit is that my husband has been going with me -- we haven't been out this much at night in ages. What fun it's been. |

Laugh. That was my problem, too. I thought of that immediately. Wonder if someone else tried it?
