LOL. Jeffrey, if you get close enough to a rhino to photo his goods, of either variety, you deserve a ribbon.
BTW, cool blog, Darren!
And Julianne, welcome back! I'll bet you are so relieved to be done with jury duty. Sounds like a heart-wrenching case. |

Hi guys
Ok FS for Feb is climbing to 5.7 on its way up, 29 votes so the 6.0 is a possible target. ***everything crossed***
Thanks for the blog comments, i think the theme is set. I am just about to finish the plug ins to make it user friendly, looking to set up some external links so if anybody was to link swap just pop over an email to me. i want to link to as many DPC'ers as possible ;-)
The blogs will be set up correctly this weekend as i have a couple of photography jobs on that need to be done before hand.
cheers
darren

Christian xianart, I just read your response to sickdog on the suck forum. I didn't reply there because I didn't want to sidetrack what the thread was about. But I have to say I was ROFLMAO at one of your comments that obviously has a different meaning there than it does here. |

I need to rant for a short moment. I'm happy with my FS, which just crossed the 6.0 mark, but am frustrated because I only have an older version of PS Elements on my computer and don't have the memory to load anything bigger. I can't use curves, tone map, convert to b&w using channel mixer, or do anything even remotely close to HDR. The result seems to be that I can't really be competitive with shots with a lot of color range and DOF. My winking owl did well because it had a very shallow DOF and limited colors, I think. Or maybe animal photos are the only type I have any real aptitude for shooting, "real aptitude" being relative when compared with some other people's utterly fab animal shots on DPC.
Okay, done with rant, will have to suck it up, load "real" Photoshop, or shut up.
cosprenks am glad you are back shooting! |

That DOES sound frustrating. If you do try to load something else on your computer I wish you luck with it. |

Darren - that is WAY cool news. Heck, I may have to visit just to see the display! Is it plagiarism if I shoot pictures of your pictures on display?? :-) |

Oh, and the verdict is pretty much in - my Low Key shot isn't. Commenters agree it's a nice shot, just not a low key shot. Ah well. Back to the drawing board... :-) |

I'll have to see if the lovely and cheap RyanAir flies anywhere close to Dublin. If not, there's London and there are trains, right? |

This is perhaps my first entry in the true spirit of suck. I like my shot and its processing, and obviously the first 24 voters have disagreed. We'll see how it goes... |

Here are some options. a) For HDR, I believe most are using Photomatix before Photoshop. b) If you are shooting Raw, settings like exposure, shadows and others can be changed during the conversion process before going into Photoshop, and 3) there are some 3rd party software extensions available for Elements like a masking plug-in. |

Mary, thanks for the tips. I am looking into downloading Photomatix, but think I'd better upload a higher version of PS first - the reason being that if you get Photomatix with the tonemapping option, you need a reasonable version of PS for them to work in tandem.
I REALLY also need to start shooting in RAW. It is my own damn fault, and I know it. I've been afraid of it for some reason. |

Hesitate no longer! Shoot in RAW! Adds a processing step but you get so much more range in RAW than you do in JPEG. That said, I shoot RAW+jpeg and often use the jpeg for challenge entries. If I want to print the thing, or want to do more with it than my usual levels, curves, sharpen, submit processing, I'll use the RAW version.
And Darren, if Ryanair goes to Dublin, just let me know when the display goes up and I'm there!!

I feel the same way, Catherine. Shooting in RAW is one of my goals for 2007, but I haven't done anything about it yet -- still somewhat intimidated. Plus the size of the files puts me off. I am filling up hard drives at a good clip without using RAW, and my poor laptop is choking for memory. |

I just recently started shooting in raw and I love it. (Not in THE raw). Just remember that each image is about 5-6mb. You will need some place to off-load these to. For Christmas, I received a 160GB external hard drive just for that purpose. |
