Supreme Council, that could be cool. That would the "old" members, and the rookies (just brought on) could still be the Site Council. hehe

As far as watermarking, Langdon was working on something at one point, but it got ridiculous on the site end to do it. I don't know if he's still ironing it out or not. I know we discuss periodically.

Karmat we can use Flickr's Method. Just place the image in a DIV with another DIV over top of it the upper DIV contains a blank transparent gif called spaceball.

When they right click and save as all they get is spaceball.gif and not the image they wanted. Flickr does this to accounts that have "protection" on them.

Hey, you guys,

I may be going blind with rage - but I can't for the life of me find my coffee/milk shot on Wierdspot. Probably too much to hope for that it's been taken down, I guess.
John Whites McNaught Comet shot is at the bottom of the first page though.

And thanks to everyone for their help.
I'm hoping to get some news about the shot also being removed from Break.com by tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I didn't know what this was so I popped over to flickr and tried to save a picture from the right click... pretty cool. Seems fairly easy to do. Does anyone know an "easy" work around to this? If not, seems like something fairly easy to add to the website!

The way around it is 1. View source find the image.. long ass way around. Easiest way is in firefox togoto page info then click the media tab and find the image in the list.

I have the solution and the way around lol.

Yep... I just figured that out as well by going into the source... :-(

What we need to do is start an open source digital signature service to allow folks to sign their pictures. The service could then go out and find instances of that signature. I believe there is one that exists but it costs $$$ to use. Something more cost efficient would be useful.

Well Flickr isn't hard to snag them off either, and they actually give you a link to do it. Look at the image, click view all sizes, then they have a Download the Original size link above it. Images seen on our screens are always in our cache, with the exception of a Javascript viewer (I think).
Sadly, about the only way to not open the door for image theft is not to put them on the web.

OK, Weirdspot got my respect. That was fast and courteous. Now that's it's the week, let's see how Break.com handles itself.

Break doesn't seem very attentive as my photo with Art burning their building is still online with their address posted :-)

Brad some accoutns are setup to ONLY have one size view small. The only link your able to click is Blog This. The accounts are setup for all images to be this way. They place a DIV ontop of the image with a blank 1x1 transparent gif thats stretched the full height and width of the image.

When u right click and save it saves the transparent gif. If you dont understand ill link you to an account that setup like this. This is an old technique thats been given a new purpose. By default the account isnt setup like this im not sure what the setting is to achieve this but most photojournalists use it.

Well the transparent gif is useful for the non-technical folks but as stated earlier, just open the source and look for the source name of the image and plug that in your browser... works for flickr.

I still think the best is to have a digital signature and service to search for illegal usage. Something more cost efficient then the services that are available now.

On the server side u can log all images being viewed. But guess what the http request to view an image and download it byt he same url is the same when made by a browser. For instance i can go in and look at most viewed pages and images show up in the same log. But that number is both views and downloads. Download counters can be made when the download is by a link but doesnt help this situation at all.

Here's the thing guys - every security method you can think of has a work around. However, any security method you choose to implement will still be a deterrent. Will it stop someone who is determined? No. But will it stop less sophisticated thieves and slow down others who are a bit more savvy? Yes. Just because something has a flaw doesn't mean it's got to be all or nothing. Any security measure, no matter how simple or complex, is better than having nothing at all.

Safety measures have been hashed and rehashed many times -- just search for 'right click protection' for an example. Each and every discussion comes to the same conclussion, 'the only way to prevent images from being stolen is to not put them on the internet'. Each and every protective measure is equally ineffective and all of them annoy the honest users. It's not even a matter of having to be computer or internet savvy to get around them -- and those we're interested in stopping are generally quite savvy -- a simple print screen gets around nearly all of them.
