A search of milk yields that it's gone as well, as nothing newer than 5 days is showing with the word milk in it's title.

Good!

To prevent something like this in the future, is there a way we can digitally "sign" or leave a watermark at the corner or something similar for some copy protection?

You can put watermarks on your images but you can't for any challenges here. Would be nice if DPC could do it though.

The problem with that is it breaks the anonymity.

Yes, I know. What I meant was a general DPC watermark. At least it would be something.

Here's the thing guys - every security method you can think of has a work around. However, any security method you choose to implement will still be a deterrent. Will it stop someone who is determined? No. But will it stop less sophisticated thieves and slow down others who are a bit more savvy? Yes. Just because something has a flaw doesn't mean it's got to be all or nothing. Any security measure, no matter how simple or complex, is better than having nothing at all.

Safety measures have been hashed and rehashed many times -- just search for 'right click protection' for an example. Each and every discussion comes to the same conclussion, 'the only way to prevent images from being stolen is to not put them on the internet'. Each and every protective measure is equally ineffective and all of them annoy the honest users. It's not even a matter of having to be computer or internet savvy to get around them -- and those we're interested in stopping are generally quite savvy -- a simple print screen gets around nearly all of them.

I know this. I've seen the threads. But everyone seems to take an all or nothing approach instead of trying to curb it in bits and pieces instead. Like I said, no security measure is foolproof, but any security measure you choose will deter someone, and then there's just that much less theft to deal with. It will always be a problem, but you might as well fight it where you can.

Damn it, I NEVER get to use the pitchfork :-(

BTW, I agree with Karma... some security is better than none. The DIV layer is quite a deterrent to the casual image thief, much moreso than the right click javascript.

Lots of times people post images in the forums asking for editing help. If a transparent div layer was in place, how would the "helpers" easily get the image to work on?

How about the 1x1 gif thing, plug the option to display this in your photo details...

bod has one on his profile. Click the bitton to see the details. That way, if you put up a pic wanting other people to edit it or whatever, you can check a box and then either:

This logo is displayed and the 1x1 gif is removed...

or, even better:

The 1x1 link remains, but for members/users who are logged in, a download link appears. That would mean thieves would have to register, and we could maybe somehow track downloads to find suspicious activity... To make sure the CCL is upheld, there should also be a way for people to upload the edit from the original photo's page which would automatically parse the original photographers name, title, link etc in the details, as well as also applying the CCL to it. The original could then also have links to all photos deriving from it to better organise things so people stumbling across it without reading who le forum threads can still learn and see other edits/uses easily. I think that would be a really good addition, if it makes sense from my description :P

Hey Leroy, don't be sad, you'll get to use that pitchfork one of these days....;-D

I just clicked on to the Break.com link that Elvis_L sent me on Saturday and read "Content has been removed".

THANKS to all for the support and help!

And I notice that John's comet shot is now properly credited, with a link to his site :) THAT wasn't there before.

OK... I do have an idea that might help a bit...

Why isn't the copyright notice closer to the image and LARGER. I think there should be a copyright notice directly under the photos. I really do think a LOT of people believe that anything on the net is Public Domain.

But, for now, I've put this at the top of the comment section of all my pics.

At least I hope it will keep the mostly honest people honest.
