It was chemistry and geometry.
And while it was mentioned in the forums that it didn't necessarily have to deal with school, there was no challenge description, just the title. Many people do not read the forums so they just had the title to go on. |
and when you look at the chemistry and geometry challenges, you'll see very little representation of 'school'. chemistry had more than geometry, but, all the same, very little. makes you wonder what changed in the mind of the voter in the past five months to make so many of them anal about the challenge title... |

| Just barely hanging on to a 6.0 in Music - it was at almost 6.2 for 24 hours but back down to the cliff-hanger. |

That is really unfortunate. Looking at the entries again, I believe the one that I noticed as missing was one that I gave a high score |

Amy I recognized your photo in voting and gave it a high score, it was lovely. But I don't think you should hate SC! They are only doing their jobs and if it went against the basic editing rules it had to be DQ'd to be fair to everyone (not saying that you went against the basic rules on purpose).

I think DrAchoo hit it on the head. I didn't read the forum threads about these challenges. I expected them both to require and be involved about school, given the titles.
I wish I had known in advance, because "Biology" without the "School" is really no different than a free study nature challenge, and I would have submitted to it. But on the other hand, this seems to contradict the many comments I've seen before which said people like very specific themed challenges, because it's more of a challenge. (Personally, I like free studies or technical challenges.)
All in all, since there's no description of the challenge, I don't know why one would assume the full titles were just there to be cute. But the interpretation is, in the end, in the voter's eyes.

Yep, this is what I said way earlier on this thread:
I know there was all that discussion about the topic...but for one, if any changes were made after the topic was released it really impacted on those guys that submitted photos on the first day. Even with the description out of the topic, the topic still includes the words "School Days"...so I'm just wondering what the voters who don't read the forums will be thinking... that's all. It's like saying "The topic is 'Black and White Portrait' but the 'Black and White' part is just a way of inviting some classical looking portraits, so don't get too hung up about that aspect..."

I was expecting the "school" aspect too. I am not voting anyone down becuase there isn't an obvious school connection, but a quality entry with a school connection might get a bump from me for bringing the two together.
Think of it as "extra credit" ;-)

Look at it this way, if it did finish in the top 5 it would have been reviewed anyway.
The problem with a post voting DQ for a top 3 entry is the entry that originally came in 4th. Ribbons are nice and all but the real value in finishing in the top 3 is the exposure that the photographer and his/hers image receives while they are basking in the glory of the front page.
If one of the top 3 entries gets DQd, the formerly 4th place image does not get its week in the spotlight.
Look at any of the past challenge's top 10 page. And look at the drop off in views from 3rd to 4th. The top three entries get many times the number of views compared to the rest of the top 10.
I have requested 4 or 5 validations since I've joined DPC. I did request one for Music and it apparently has been DQ'd. I don't think I was the only one to request the validation since the DQ came in a few hours after the request for validation. It usually takes the SC a day or 2 to validate or DQ an image. This tells me that I wasn't the only one that saw something in this particular image. It was the highest scoring image in the Music challenge for me. High scoring images will always get more scrutiny. I do not know if it was xxxscarletxxx's image or not. I know I was looking forward to seeing her entry.
I have also received validation requests. It is part of the DPC process.

Whoah, hold on there. Why hate the SC? Why hate the person who spotted illegal processing in your image? Why hate anyone but yourself if you broke the rules in order to get a high score. I know you must be disappointed, but its is NOT SC's fault. They didn't single you out and steal something from you - they did what they do day in and day out -- which is to enforce DPC editing rules. Hating someone over your mistake is a bit immature, don't you think?

Well said Cindi, and I am sure there is much more satisfaction from ribboning KNOWING you played on the same level field as everyone else. If I got a ribbon, and later realized I had inadvertently broken a rule, it wouldnt feel valid |

You are far too young to be filled with such negative energy. Might I suggest that you use some of that energy to try to prove to the SC that your photo was achieved through basic editing. Like others have stated, if it was in Ribbon territory then it would've had to be validated anyways and it's only fair that Legal edits make it to the front page to get the views they deserve. If it was a ribboner, then it's worth proving right? And if it wasn't legal editing then there's nobody to be upset with but yourself for trying to get away with something and failing or just not understanding the basic editing rules. Take it as a lesson learned, too bad it had to be on a personal best though.

Ah Amy, you have so much talent for making great pictures. If the DQ came in all innocence, then while you must feel disappointed and really frustrated, then just accept it as part of the ongoing learning and move on. I have made some minor mistakes in submitting photos: one was a spelling error in the title and the other is the present Music entry...I submitted the wrong image (the weaker of two I had)... Frustrating!
But if you took a chance with the editing rules and were placed in the top few places, then you must know, as others have said, the image would have needed to be verified and you would have suffered a great embarassment if it was DQ'd at that stage. Would you have felt any real pride in your work if you ribboned and had not been found out for over-stepping the editing rules?
Conversely, if someone else ever ribboned ahead of you and did not adhere to rules, you would quite rightly feel resentful.
I have often wondered when DQ's come up in the top 3 places, and the person who came in 4th is shunted up the ladder to 3rd, that they in some way have been cheated of a small glory.... to not enjoy that initial flush of pride as results come out...?
Dunno: we don't want to cheat people of their rewards, and we don't want to ever feel slighted.
Hope that you're feeling a bit more at peace now that some time has passed. |

i myself am filled with self-anger and loathing. how silly of my to think that because the previous 'school days' challenges were essentially topic-driven free-studies that these would be no different. and to see my image getting slammed with comments about 'no school'. oh, woe, woe, woe is me...
