Hiya,

So, after browsing though the forum and reading through the responses to some of the other newbie's questions on which equipment to buy, I thought I'd throw my own questions out there for some feedback, please.

First, though, a little background on me and my photography. I have a Sony DSC-P41 Cyber-shot currently, a point-and-shoot camera that I used to just use from time to time. However, back in December, I heard about this whole "Project 365" jazz, and thought, "Hey, that sounds cool; I could do that." So I did, and now I carry my little camera everywhere--seems strange not to, now. I've would even go so far as to say that I've started to develop a good eye for things that might make a good photo.

However, I've noticed that only about 20 percent of my photos turn out well once I get them loaded up on my computer, and there's only so much Photoshop can do to help. Most of the cool pictures I (thought) I took down at the museum recently wound up being deleted, and I decided that I wanted to upgrade my camera and learn more about photography. A DSLR camera seems like the obvious next step.

I love the Nikon D80, but I can't afford it. It's not a case of being cheap--I really don't have the money. Furthermore, I'm not entirely sure I need a camera like that, especially just now. I'm pretty much set on a Nikon, and I've been looking at either the D40 or the D50. Personally, I'm leaning toward the D50, though someone elsewhere on these boards described the D40 as kind of a training camera for people who are learning. That sounds good, but as I said, I'm leaning toward the D50, because I think it would be a relatively good camera to learn on, as well as having a little more room for expansion later on (though that could just be me talking out of my butt, who knows?).

As far as what I'd like to use it for is general, all-purpose photography: urban/city stuff, the cats, for travel, indoors, outdoors, big, and small. I'm really drawn to landscapes. I think, for me, the question is learning the right techniques and my f-stops from my a-hole, and to continue developing my instinct for what makes a good photo.

I guess I'm looking for some feedback from some more seasoned photographers. Is the D50 the right choice, or would I be better served by going with the D40? Are there other considerations that I haven't thought of that maybe I should? Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Right, I'm off to bed. Thanks, everyone.

Cheers!
Daniel

Daniel, I can't really comment on the Nikon as I am a Canon girl through and through, although I do have a friend whose first SLR was a D50,and they found it suited their needs perfectly.
What I would like to say though, is that I am sure you are going to fit right in here at DPC. You are coming in with a really good attitude - and for those that are keen this site is a brilliant learning resource; the experienced members share their expertise very willingly, never put beginners down, and are always happy to answer even the most basic questions, especially from those who are truly keen to learn from their advice. Welcome aboard.
Sara.

Thanks, Sara! Can't write much now, though, because I gotta go to work! :-/

Hello and WELCOME to DPC! I am going to attempt to give you some advice here ;)

There is a section of this site for equipment and if you go there and click on the camera you are thinking of getting, you get a lovely list of people that own it and get to see some beautiful shots taken with it ;)

PM them. Ask them the ups and downs of their own camera because I can guarantee you, whatever they use, they will praise. Make them tell you about the downsides to the specific camera. AND, make sure they have been here a while ;)

Like Sara said, this is a BRILLIANT learning resource. Use it well :) Oh, and welcome to the addiction :)

Thanks, Johanna. That's a great idea about PMing other members who have the cameras I'm considering. My only regret is that I wish I'd started looking for a new camera and thinking about it a month ago--we're going to Paris next week, and as it's looking now, I'll be stuck with the P&S! :-/

Merde! as they might say in France.

I'm also wondering what people think about cameras that have been refurbished by the manufacturer. I've never had a refurbished product, so I don't know what to look for or expect.
