How many photos did most of the people selling them have in their portfolio before selling them on stock sites? |

Not all the images in a typical person's portfolio would necessarily be stock suitable. At least a few hundred would be a good start but then if you're productive so would the minimum the site requires to get in. |

More quality shot would definitely help. |

I've got probably 50,000 shots from cameras that would never have passed any stock requirements. As soon as I got my DSLR (Rebel XT), I started submitting stuff to the micros.
I would say on average I come up with about 200 shots a week that I'm happy with, and about 10-50 that qualify as stock. I'm anxiously awaiting Alamy's upload function to go live, since I have virtually no motivation to do the whole disk submission thing. |

To start, not per week. |

If you want to be a stock shooter, you need to learn to think "stock". While you are shooting everyday images if you are thinking in the back of your head "can I get a model release, are there logos in the frame, etc" you will have a better chance of collecting more suitable images in a shorter period of time. I collect ~300 shots per 3 month period and upload 4 times per year.
Having a few sale-able shots is a start, but you will not find you need dozens or hundreds before you begin to see a steady income. Remember every buyer is looking for ONE shot, and they have many many to choose from so your shots need to be really special to get regular sales.
