I know this is sort of a vague question, but I am not sure how to be more specific. Basically what I am wondering is how would you guys go about getting a start into photojournalism like sports photography or working for a paper, even something as simple as maybe them giving you a few jobs every once in awhile. Any ideas?

I'm shooting for a few tiny papers in trade for ad space - since they have no budget for photography. It gets me a press pass, a little publicity, and a chance to build a portfolio of published work to show the "big" papers in the future.

Not that it's the "right" way - but I created a career in animation by just building a portfolio, so I'm trying it again in photojournalism.

It's harder the second time because you know how big the mountain might be. :-)
