So from the the 14-22 or there abouts in March I will be somewhere between Chapel Hill and Durham NC with my girlfriend visiting her family and relaxing and will some time to shoot photos. I think for one night we may go to the coast, from what I hear it will be two hours away. I know nothing of the area at all and am open to any suggestions that people may have of what and where to shoot. I would like to leave it open to try and meet some DPC folk if you are around, but except for booking the flight our plans are still not nailed down yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to be in the Pinehurst area from March 10 - March 17. One of those days I will be playing Pinehurst Number 2. Depending on schedules maybe we can meet up. Hopefully some others will speak up.

the closest coast is about 3 hours, depending on traffic and how fast you drive. the better stuff is closer to 4.5 hours. 3 hours will get you down to wilmington or over to morehead city, but 4/4.5 will get you to the outer banks (home of kitty hawk, jockeys ridge, and a bunch of light houses). just check a map or mapquest it, you'll get the picture. it looks like you might have enough time to make it worth heading over for a day or so.
around the triangle, though, depending on what you want to shoot, there is an absolute ton. chapel hill is a compact university town with an abundance of old town charm (no buildings downtown are more than 3 stories high, most are 1 or 2). lots of hills, beautiful-God's-country scenery, as well as great architecture.
durham is an incredible mixed bag. it's an old mill town that has been struggling with redefining itself for the past 50 years or more. really great stuff to shoot around duke, as well as the city neighborhoods around there. the downtown area is small, yet interesting. a lot of people don't think it's that safe, and there probably is some justification for that, but, all the same, if you don't WALK into any places you wouldn't feel comfortable, you should be okay.
and, just 20-30 minutes away is raliegh, the state capitol. again, an incredible variety of stuff to shoot. they have a neighborhood that is home to the largest collection of victorian architecture east of the mississippi. it's nearly 20 blocks of incredibly restored and maintained homes.
all the way around, it is a shooter's paradise.
btw, if you want to travel for 3 hours, richmond is barely 3 hours north ;-)

It looks like you have a nice coast near you, if you were gonna drive all the way to the NC coast, you might consider taking that time and driving to the mountains instead. It takes a tad under 3 hours from chapel hill and the coast is only slightly shorter, 2 hours is if you're speeding pretty good the whole way. You could go skiing or snowboarding or just go and enjoy the blue ridge parkway(you would probably want to stay at least one night). If you like hockey you could try to catch a hurricanes game. The sites posted above looked pretty helpful, wish I could say more considering I'm from Raleigh. I'd be happy to try to answer any questions you have. I'll do what I can.

Lol, I never thought about it like that, guess it takes an open mind. I had been there so long before college it all began to look the same to me. |

Thanks for all the tips!! The mountains sounds pretty nice too, keep the ideas coming as nothing is really set yet. I know we will go over night somehwere and hadn't thought about the mountains. Sounds like Chimney Rock may be alittle far, and thanks for the links Saracat. Skip I'll have to see if my girlfriend is interested in seeing Richmond ;) |

This is great, I would like to meet up with some people but I think as it gets closer I will see when my free time is. I should have started another thread like "I'll be in the Bay Area every week of the year except for some time in March, if anyone wants to meet up or show me where to shoot photos let me know" lol.
The newest tangent in our plan is to change arrival flight to Nashville and stay there for a night and then drive to Raleigh to see some of the Appalachians on the way. |

holy smokes, that's a 9 hour drive! well, 8 plus the hour you lose crossing the timezone. some parts of it are gorgeous, but you're gonna wind up doing more in-car visiting than viewing...64 across TN is rather, um, boring...
have fun ;-) |

Hey Jeff,
Sounds like you are going to be either in Cary or Hillsborough, NC. I have a brother, sister in law, and neice that live outside of Chapel Hill. As a rabid UNC fan, I would suggest taking some shots on the campus of UNC and Franklin Street. You could walk around and get a picture of the old well and bell tower, as well as enjoy a drink or something to eat on Franklin Street (the main street through campus).
Keep in mind that it is going to be an AWESOME time to be on tobacco road as the NCAA basketball tournament will be going on. College basketball is king in the Triangle with UNC, NC State, and Dook all being in the area. There will be a lot of fun to be had during the games.
I'll ask my brother about some other places. He likes to drive around on the backroads and find cool old farms, barns, and run down buildings.
Have fun,
- D |

I'd say that is the low estimate. I would put it at closer to 10 hours. It's almost 5 from Nashville, TN to Asheville, NC and another 4 or 5 to the Raleigh Durham area.
If you see that you will be in the Asheville area during any of that time, let me know and I'll point you to some cool spots. IF you will teach me to process bw (haha). |

We are planning a trip up to the Ashville area in October. We will stay there for a few days then head over to Knoxville area before heading home.
I am not to sure how far it is but the Biltmore Estatesare a must seen in NC (for me at least). I would make a great over night trip.

Doing Biltmore requires at LEAST 4 hours. More in a lot of cases, but it depends on your "attitude" about that kind of stuff.
Just a thing to mention, if any of you ever visit Biltmore, don't plan on taking your camera inside, but they allow outdoor stuff. No photography inside the "house" at all. I would also caution that they probably have some architectural rights that mean you can't resell photos made there.
Not that such has ANYTHING to do with this thread... Sorry. |
