I saw this question in another site, but just curious about DPC'ers comments:
"Why do we photographers enjoy taking pictures so much? What makes photography so enjoyable?".
- My wife thinks I'm insane photographing flowers I normally give her or in our garden lying in the ground taking pictures of anything I see that's very interesting to me :-) |

I'm not coordinated enough to draw or paint or sculpture. I don't have a way with words to write elegantly. I don't have what it takes to put sounds together and make beautiful (or otherwise) music. I don't have the patience to grow a flower garden.
I have an eye that sees...

Here, Here!
About my only other talent is creative design, but I can't draw it, paint it or sculpture it. I can play piano, but those are expensive and it doesn't get me outside enjoying everything there is to take pictures of. Besides, I can't hang a piano on my wall, and give it as gifts :-) |

To deviate from the topic a little, there is a great book on drawing called "drawing on the right side of the brain" by betty edwards. It teaches that drawing has less to do with dexterity of the hand than the observation of the eye, and introduces exercises aimed at seeing instead of technique. The processes involved I believe would help photography as well as it teaches people how to see accurately and with detail. =)

Photography is the reason/catalyst for me doing everything else.
Travel
Events
Life
These activities merely provide opportunities for stimuli to capture moments. Photography is my choicest medium for communication. The one that is the most fun. |

to pass my view of a given subject on for others to enjoy/ponder.
to capture ordinary things in a way others tend to over look.
to capture a moment that can be looked back upon for years and years.
to bring smiles to others faces.

Photography has opened my eyes to everyday things and scenes that surround me. I continuously walk (or drive) around looking at things to see if they are photo worthy. When I find something I like, I'll observe it through the lens to see if it translates well. When it does, I'll photograph it and hope that I can do it justice. I then want to share that with others, and hope that I can make them see things the way that I saw them. If they like it, I know that I have succeeded. That encourages me to continue my search for "special" scenes.

It lets me show the world to others through MY eyes...
For myself, it helps me slow down. To look at the world differently. To not let it just RUSH on by. |

It gives me a reason to be in the woods hiking year round instead of just deer season and plus I like the Christmas morning feel when I get my slides.

I think TooCool nailed it... I do it because I have no other visual artistic talent at all. I enjoy 'showing' things in ways that they are not normally viewed. There is a completely different world to see when you view it through your viewfinder.

We enjoy it??? O.K. maybe at one time or when it's just for me, but the majority of what I do now isn't for pleasure, it's my job. Not that I dislike it either (if I did I wouldn't do it), to me it's kind of like breathing, really don't even think about it and wouldn't know what to do without it. |

My primary focus is via an altogether different medium, which requires much time, patience and stick-with-itness. Photography, instead, provides an almost instant gratification. The trouble is that it is nearly as addictive.
Another benefit of photography is the fact that its is popular and easily appreciated by those who are not themselves photographers and artists. It is a less alienating occupation.

I do it because most other stuff in my life is stress inducing. I can be having a bad day, and focusing (no pun intended) on something else for a few minutes trying to get a good shot, helps me get my mind off of it. Then, the separation helps me to see that the stress isn't so bad.
Then, there are those rare moments when you look at a shot, and know that it is good. For me, those are very rare, but priceless nonetheless.
