Need advice from one of you puter gurus out there. I just got a new computer and all web graphics are now distorted. All our once gorgeous photos are smeared, off color etc. ACK!
The graphics card is ok because I can open things in PSP or even the windows viewer and they look great. I think it is in an IE setting somewhere?
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Right click on your desktop, choose properties, and click on the settings tab. Make sure you are running 32 bit color and not 256 color.

Try in IE :
Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Look for the 'Multimedia' sub-tree and disable 'Automatic Image Resizing'. If it's not that, it should be some other option in that same group.

Thanks guys
Yep I'm running on 32 bit.
Glimpses, I did what you suggested. There are only two choices there that I can see tht would change graphics and I tried them both. No luck.
I just started using Earthlink. Wonder if that would make a difference.

Possibly. I know that AOL uses a algorhythm to further compress graphic images beyond what was already done to them on the website. They do this to help load times on web pages and to keep their traffic down. Unfortuently it decreases the the quality fo an image. not the photographers/web site's fault but AOL.
Maybe they are doing the same thing.
Maybe try saving an image that does not look to good down to your harddrive, then pull it up in photoshop. just an idea to try. |

Thanks Jason. I experimented with that by logging onto a different ISP, but it shows the same thing so found its not Earthlink.
Yes, if I save the image to my hard drive and open it in PSP, it looks fine so I think it has to be how my browser is looking at it. I use IE.
I've been digging through Microsoft help files but haven't found an answer yet.

I had something like this happen to me once. In Internet Explorer all the images would come up as black boxes w/ green stripes through them. In Netscape everything worked fine. After trying everything I could think of I took it back in to where I bought it and they tried to tell me that the motherboard was messed up. I don't think that was the real problem, but they cut me a check for what I paid for it because the PC was old enough that they weren't making them anymore.
So maybe trying a different browser might help? To see if you have the same problem.

Don't know if this will work on your computer but you might try deleting IE, and then reloading it from a restore disk, or from a cd you have made yourself from the Microsoft site. And, if your computer is new and you haven't put a lot of stuff onto it yet, you could try a full restore from cd. Also, if you have WinXP, there is a troubleshooter in the display properties dialog box accessed from the Control Panel. I haven't had to use it myself but may be worth a try. |

Not to state the obvious but, have you tried rebooting?

Are you using the IE browser that Earthlink provided? A friend is on the 'high speed' netzero... no high speed about the service except the IE browser they provide compresses images to the point they look like you have described. If you can view attached pictures in email fine and in PSP/other programs - it's the browser you are using... |

OK after spending hours on both Microsoft and Dell message boards I have discovered there is a problem with new Dell computers and IE6. Neither Dell nor Microsoft can offer a fix. There is a semi fix where you can have clear images, but rediculously small fonts.
The only true fix for now is to use a different browser. Soooo off to download Netscape. You wouldn't believe how terrible all your photos are looking to me!
Thanks for all the suggestions :) You guys are way cool

Why don't you get Mozilla instead of Netscape? |

Don't cast any votes until you get netscape. LOL |

I recommend Mozilla (www.mozilla.org), on which Netscape is based. Another very good one is Firebird and it's available on the same site as Mozilla.

I reccommend you return it to Dell and get another computer. |

Whow, a can of worms never looked so good :)
Mozilla huh? Haven't tried it. But at a 28800 connection I don't want to download another one to try. Took 2 1/2 hours for this one. We don't have high speed access in my area.
Thanks again for all your help
