You are allowed to do whatever you want, you could enter a photo of a person if you like! Whether it will get good votes is another question. :)

You are allowed to do whatever you want and the voters are allowed to vote however they want...

Both those shots came about after reading challenge descriptions and then thinking to myself: "Self, you could take a picture of ***** to fit this challenge". Not sure if that means a lot, but it just so happens...

It means a lot if you want 'higher' scores. You are undoutably better at what DrAcoo calls "the game" than I am. For DPC photography I envy you both. :)

Not much call for envy over here :), but if I ever get lost in the middle of a desert, could we swap places?

ETA that I probably lack a 'photographic agenda', so that challenges work to get me out there using and learning the gear.

If you are lost in a harsh, dangerous desert in the heat of summer and want to survive against all logical expectation then I'm probably the guy you want to exchange places with. I have experience in that area and might be able to do it again. But then, if I could not do it twice you might feel VERY bad. ;)

Agreed that challenge topics serve as a good excuse to get out there and take pictures.

As opposed to a good quality image, do you think failure to meet someone else's expectations as to what meets or does not meet an arbitrary weekly challenge topic be grounds for a poor score for a DPC photograph?

I would feel pretty bad, wouldn't I? I just remembered your 'lost' period. I was quietly impressed.

Now, the question of arbitrary topics and other people's expectations - to paraphrase Dr. Achoo - that's the game, isn't it? On the other hand, I do hope and believe that quality can shine through. The sort of quality that breaks down an individual's pre-set perceptions is rare though. There is, on the other hand, extra voter-kudos to be gained where the photographer can be seen to have had a little 'inspiration' directly related to the challenge form, if, say, title+challenge+photograph all work to positive effect against each other.

Edited to remove a suggestion for picture/title combination - just in case someone wanted to actually try it :)

Good luck to everybody. and may people be generous in there votes.

I don't have a macro lens either, I use my 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor reverse mounted.

Steve

I am not a big DNMC voter. I have to say that in every chellenge I will vote on picture quality, impact and lastly challenge criteria. If it is a great picture with wonderful impact then I will vote it down maybe 1 or 2 points depending on how DNMC IMHO it is. When I first started on DPC I used to use the whole spectrum of grading to its full extent, but now that I am "seasoned" I find that I very rarely vote 3 or below and not so many as a 4. I will always choose my favorite shot/shots and then grade them from 10 downwards according to my interpretation.

My very first entry on DPC was such a huge dissappointment, it was in the Wooden challenge where, if you read the requirements, Wood had to be an important PART of the composition (not necessarily the main subject - cant remember the exact description right now) so I got an ornate wooden frame and put it against the wall of our house which is wooden, put some flowers in and got my two cats to pose for me. It was in the 90s F if I remember correctly and I really struggled in the heat but I got a shot I liked, only to have it voted down because people thought it was DNMC!!!! I was mortified and wanted to throw in the towel right there and then. It was the first time that I had actually shot something for a specific subject and I thought it was pretty good LOL. Of course the fact that it had cats in it didnt help (I have since learned about the animal aversion here) but I have kept on truckin' LOL.

So to those DNMC voters who slam a photo no matter what it looks like if they feel it DNMC, take a step back and think, after all it is a photography site and yes the subject is important but so is the quality of the photograph, think of those "newbies" who are sitting there eagerly waiting for your words of wisdom on their masterpiece.

OK off of my soapbox. sorry does not really answer your question and I hope that some of the DNMCs come out of the Woodwork and give us their views.

I don't have a macro lens or an adapter, so just took with my 17.5 - 45mm . No great expectations for this challenge though. Did my best, submitted, and will enjoy seeing how I compare with others. Looking at the last Insect Challenge, my image is not too shabby, but things have progressed since then, so I may be looking at another 5.5 image.

Some insects set you a difficult task on how much to include of its body - if you include the whole body you don't need a macro lens in some cases...

I am in!!!

After nearly a month of not being able to do my photography I am happy and am well pleased with what I accomplished.

Good Luck to everyone who has/will enter!!! I look forward to seeing the entries.

Well, mine would be concidered a DNMC... and the composition is poor. and the lighting is less than desirable... i can't wait to see how many people hate it...

as for voting against DNMC's i have not voted a whole lot, but when i did, i would vote on my over all appeal, composition, and general feel of the image. rate it as if it met the challenge, and then tell them that i thought it didnt meet the challenge, but i gave it a (X) score because of these concepts...

and may every DNMC'er vote like that :P

Have submitted my shot and decided to go for my fav of the bunch rather than an extreme macro of said bug - that was scary! Lets hope peeps think it deserves higher than my average vote :)

So... I did go out and hunt for tiny critters to shoot today. Found one. Remembered this is Minimal Editing so paid close attention to composition, focus, exposure, etc. Shot about a dozen. Just finished going through them, found one decent one. Went to check the rules again to make sure I did things right. DOH!!! I shot RAW. I'm sitting this one out. I hate Minimal editing. Hate it, I tell ya! :)

Good luck to all of you.

I'm in. It's sharp, it's focused, it's unedited but now I'm worried. I guess we'll see. Good luck all.
04/15/2007 09:24:12 PM · #213
Well, after reading all your glowing comments on your images, I am totally thinking of unsubmitting mine. I thought it was decent, but now am concerned that it ain't sharp enough. Well, it is, just not everywhere. The little guy was moving a little. I have exactly 2 1/2 hours to hit the unsubmit button. Well, if I go to bed and look at the clock at 11:55, and begin to hyperventilate, I will rush to the computer, hope it boots up in time, and delete. See if its there in the morrow. good luck everybody.

I hate minimal editing too. Im a raw shooter and would have sat this one out if I didn't have a good subject to shoot. However, I doubt it will do very well, but I did participate!

I'm in. I shot a couple of different ideas this week. Trying to keep minimal in mind. Got to admit, I tried some fake bugs lol but they didn't work very well. I attended a butterfly exhibit, got nuthin... too windy. Finally went with something I shot on day one.

Did you know you can buy live packaged bugs at Home Depot for under $4? ;)

where? In the garden department? I should own stock there and at Lowes and I've never seen bugs.

I thought they sold stuff to kill bugs! If they can sell you the bugs to create the infestation first that's a pretty damn good business strategy.

These are likely ladybugs or other predators which prey on a specific local pest.

Also, there are a lot of places you can by crickets as food for various non-dog/non-cat pets.

I hadn't intended to enter, but came across my subject quite by accident yesterday while procrastinating working my Management paper. I cannot believe how ridiculously good it turned out. Probably nothing compared to what some people here likely got, but the moment I saw it at a display size in PhotoShop, I started cackling with glee...

Yup, and GenE is right, they sell the beneficial bugs that are good for the garden. :)

Sooooo... went to the Bug Zoo, shot bunches, had one edited and ready, then decided to try out my first idea. I guess the Bug Zoo shot'll go into outtakes!

I'm sure my entry won't score highly, but I hope it causes a few grins :D

I know about the crickets; the kids had anoles as adoptions from science projects which required crickets and mealworms. I don't miss that phase of their education ;-)

And can't ladybugs become terrible pests if they breed inside your house? I can just see someone picking some up, not quite getting around to the intended project, stashing the ladybugs in the basement and then WHAM - ladybugs everywhere. Still sounds like a good business strategy, though Home Depot may have to partner with an exterminator.

I am in. Changed my mind on which to enter and this will be my downfall. Good luck to all. Looking forward to seeing what everyone came up with.

Oh, and my husband kindly brought home two ticks from his camping expedition this weekend. Unintentionally, I think. I actually had a lot of fun photographing them but then decided they might get DNMC'd for too many legs. I suppose I could have removed a couple of legs and tried to create another segment in their bodies so they appeared to meet the challenge, but I decided to go with the actual insect shot I got earlier. Not the most original shot I've ever taken, but definitely an insect.

Well, you will probably clean up. Those unintentional shots that just seem to come to folks always seem to do the best. It is written in the stars, It is fated. Rebecca will be the winner.
I have an idea what it might be, but I won't spoil the fun.
