Hey all,

Now that I am settling into my new home in LA, I am planning a couple of spec fashion editorials. I'll be OK for getting models, MUAs, stylist, etc - have a decent network for such.

I have a couple of questions:

Question One: One of the shooting sites has, as a background, the side of a building with a giant mural on it. I know I likely need the building owner's permission - but do I need the mural artist's permission too?

Question Two: Setting up shoots (lights, model(s), assistants, props, etc.) in a public space in Los Angeles - e.g. a sidewalk or other public area - do I need a permit of any kind? When I was in Boston, I had a contact in the Mayor's Office who "lubricated" this process for me. I've been told several times that LA is very cool and helpful about this stuff, but haven't broken the ice yet. Any resources / contacts y'all could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Dude, they are cool, but...

...you need to call the LA Film Office before you do any shooting.

If you don't, the first LAPD, or Sheriff that asks you for a permit will shut you down right there and then.

Permits are not expensive, especially if you tell them that you are a student, or non-pro, or non-profit shoot.

It is the insurance that will get ya.

I forget what it is, it has been a while, but I think it is a standard price for still photogs, as opposed to motion pix.

Also, get your models to sign a release.

Three things to do before the shoot to protect yourself.

I can not answer your question on the mural.

Need any lighting help, PM me.

Good luck.
