Found while walking my dogs near a landfill. It has a light colored sand in some of the crevices. As you can see, it is somewhat nodular. It is hard and rough and there is a parting line that goes all around. I'd like to split it open but I haven't yet. Reminds me of a geode.

I'd suggest what truncated, fossilized human organ this might be, but that might get this DQed for violating DPC policy.

Color and texture make me think that it's some sort of base metal like iron, or maybe a pyrite.

Are you sure it's not corroded metal?

No, not metal or petrofied wood. Some of the grains are somewhat like quarts, but very small and some are dark.

the shape of it certainly reminds me of some kind of iron ore, even looks like some oxidisation on some parts but, can't really say, Strikeslip might know, isn't he a geologist of some sort?

i have a piece of fossil alligator poop that looks just like that.

not that it's necisarrily from an aligator, but it looks like poop to me

it looks kinda metallic... how heavy is it?

as a prospector, my advice is to break that bad boy open!

From the seam/line that goes all the way through the middle this doesn't look like a rock to me but something man-made. I'd have that thing cracked open to see what was inside!

Did you pour some vinegar on it?

Looks like a conglomeration, but with out information about the area, or some simple tests it makes it difficult.

Looks like sandstone and with oxidation (rust coloured areas) maybe some iron, may perhaps have flicks of quartz, you said dark spots... that might even be basalt but don't think so.

Can you scratch it with your finger nail?

The shape itself can be from a fast fusion of materials, say edge of a lava flow, rolled the items together. Heat, pressure, time, changes things...

I don't think it is man made. It is hard as a......a...well, rock. And heavy like one too.
I've not put anything on it except water to wash off some of the sand. I really want to crack it open and probably will but I don't want to rush without some more input.
What would vinegar do? Do you think if I placed it in water and froze it that it would crack open?

some rocks are heavier than others... when i say "is it heavy" i mean "does it seem like its heavier than you would expect a rock that size to be?"

No, about what you would expect of a rock. The sand covering it is not typical of the area.....mostly limestone here but this area is composed of fill dirt, rock, old concrete etc. so there is no telling where it came from. There are small pieces of iron ore natural to this area. I used to hike this mountain (ha ha), they call it Eagle Mountain, when I got around better. Lots of fossils and sandstone and some flint but mostly limestone.
