I was approached by an editor for a Danish publisher (Schultz Forlag) to use one of my photos for the cover in an upcoming book. He asked for a price range, so I plan on using this site to calculate a price:
//www.photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm
Is this a good way to determine a price? I have already asked him for the number of books to be printed.
Thanks,
Chad
PS: I'm stoked! |

It looks to be an editorial book. From his email:
"...a book about Danish citizens who find themselves in war zones and/or natural disaster areas..."
This is the image:

I use the calculator over at www.fotosearch.com, check rights managed and search.
Yesterday I sold two tsunami photos for $1200 (cover + inside; 50k copies for some fema magazine. My experience show that it's easier to get a deal if you cut say 30% off the fotosearch price.
That's a stunning image btw!

That is an excellent way to determine the price - then remain flexible but firm (make sense?)
Or go with the microstock pricing structure and just ask for $1.00. :-p
Congrats on your pending sale BTW - how did they find your image? |

Wow... Way to go Chad! No clue on pricing, but congrats! Is that Bayou Savage? |

I've quoted him a price of $650, based on the original calculator and terje's recommendation. Wish me luck!
Trey- yes, that is Bayou Savage last summer during the drought. That spot is now under water again.
I've asked him where he found my image, and I'm waiting on a response. The title he quoted is only found on istockphoto, but I'm confused as to why he didn't buy it from them as an Extended License. But I'm not complaining!

I would think $650 is a slam dunk. That's great - it feels good be appreciated - especially monetarily!

Turns out $650 wasn't a slam dunk. They choked at that price, and we settled on $175. I know that is low, but they said they would have to find another picture otherwise. Heck, it is better than the $2 I would have gotten from istock. Hey, at least I get my photo on a book cover, and I get a free copy :-)
Oh, and it wasn't the picture I posted earlier; it is this one:

that's exactly how it's done. You did good.
You go in with a fair price, and then stay flexible enough to make the sale.
I've been making my living solely with that tactic for 15 years - I think you did good!
Congrats.
