I'm looking into upgrading from my Sony DSC F717, don't get me wrong I love this camera but it's just not fast enough, and if I have an assignment and mother nature decides its gonna rain, I'm out of luck.

I need something professional that's quick reliable and can work under rain or any rugged conditions. I have researched the Olympus E-1 it's innovative technology seems to be the right camera for any professional. The Olympus E-1 equipped with a 14-54mm lens (35mm equavilant 28mm-104mm) and a 54mm-200mm lens (35mm equavilant 100mm-400m)costs about $3,329 the camera and lenses are about 1lb lighter than competitor dslr's and traditional slr's.

I'd really like some input on wether the olympus e-1 is a good buy or should I lean more towards a Canon.

Please feel free to check out my site, I'd love to hear any comments.//www.weldonsdigitalimagingandphotography.com

Have you checked the dpreview.com reviews yet?

Search the old reviews for the Canon 1D etc. Look at the specs, look at the samples, try both (or the equivalent Nikon D1h/D2h), look at the costs and decide. Based on specs and samples I prefer the 1D myself and there are some good deals now. But many shops have already sold it out and they don't get any new ones as the succesor is around the corner.

Hi,

If your main criteria is weatherproof sealing then I think the E-1 is ideal for you. There are not many other DSLR bodies with weatherproofing - the ones that come to mind are the Canon 1D and 1Ds, both which are significantly more expensive than the E-1.

Users at the Olympus SLR forum are quite happy with their E-1 (ignoring the trolls, of course), however there are a few disadvantages that you need to be aware of.

Firstly, the range of lenses are very limited and are all expensive, but they are high quality.

Secondly, the 4/3 system is still very new and unproven in the field so there's always some air of uncertainly as to whether the system will last or end like the OM system.

Third, in my personal opinion Olympus accessories are usually much more expensive than "equivalent" accessories of other brands. For example, my Olympus FL40 flash costs about the same as my Canon 550EX flash, but the Canon flash has more power and more features. I think there is also a similar situation with battery grips from both brands.

However, I still think that the E-1 is a good deal if you are willing to get past those three points.

Good luck in your decision!

thanks Adrian,

Weather proofing is kinda a big deal. I live in Southern California and the weather is very unpredictable, I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and it started raining, posed serious problems for my DSC F717. It's raining right now and I didn't even now it was suppost to rain this weekend.

Anyways I am kinda worried about the 4/3s system and it's lenses, the do seem to be very well made. I think I'll wait a few months and see where it stands.

Thanks for the advice,
