Always a good idea, especially with images that aren't easily replaced. (like anything you've taken probably)

How much of a backup strategy does dpchallenge have in place ? The complete death of //www.betterphoto.com and their apparently losing all of the submitted photos (but still having the web site infrastructure other than images) prompted the question...

I'm looking at Archive Creator. Generic in nature, but specifically designed for the digital photographer. Each CD-R/DVD-R has an HTML index of the image files within the archive set, and is written to all of the discs in the archive set, making it easy to pop any disc in to any computer that can view HTML and locate a photo. Handles RAW files as well.

I've experimented with using a program that came with a Fuji camera to print a proof sheet of each folder of shots to an Acrobat PDF document. But I'm not consistent with it. I usually burn my folders by month to CD. If they don't fit, I put the captures on one disc and the edited pics on another.

That's the chaotic part of life...

I am shocked to see what happened to BetterPhoto and, well, I just cannot believe it...

I mean, such a big site, with so many initiatives and an already large repository of past submissions.. blew away???

That's pretty strange.

Photournament.com gets a back-up three times a day but that is made possible just because of the little image repository currently on the site.

However, I cannot really believe that they do not have a back-up of, at least, some days before...

A pity. I must admit BetterPhoto was my second favourite site after DPC and there even where some aspects of it that I liked more.

Still I cannot believe they blew it that way....

There was another {?} site that went belly-up about two years back. Gone with all the photos that had been posted. I remember because people were so outraged.
Just one more good reason to back up your photos.
I try to at least once a month if not twice. However, you know the road to good intentions is paved with.........

Anyone care to comment on if dpchallenge is backed up at all or not... ?

what i do is when i download the pictures from my camera, i immediately burn them to cd-rw... after i process them and make changes, i re-burn it to cd. when the CD-RW has enough photos on it to be full, i burn it to a CD-R, then start over with my running backup. at least, this is a pretty simple way to keep your backups current. given the cost of CD-R's nowadays, it's pretty efficient.

Also, if you use software like Adobe Photoshop Album, it gives you the option to back up your image library...

Here's my setup:

Anything pulled off of my camera is then uploaded to my online photo album. I have a weekly backup job that then puts this album repository onto tape. I would like to do it more often, but it's a smaller tape drive (10/20 GB).

I'm also considering setting up one of my other machines to mirror this data, as well as doing a remote backup to a friend's machine. That way, my data will even be safe from a fire.

The code, database structure, and data are backed up off site to two locations on a nightly basis. The challenge images are backed up weekly, and print and portfolio images monthly.

In the event of a complete failure, we may partially lose 1-3 challenges and 1 month worth of portfolio/print images. Ideally once we recovered, we would write some scripts where users could fill in the missing pieces (any portfolio images, print images, and challenge images that are missing)...

Rather, ideally we won't ever need to resort to this.

When did this happen at betterphoto? Interested becasue all my photos are all ok on this site.

Thanks

Just before christmas - they did manage to recover the data from the discs, but I think that was more luck than good planning.
