Haven't been there...but you're talking about a very, very early start if summiting is what you have in mind. It's a good hike and you definitely want to coming down of those 14ers before afternoon thunderstorms hit. Rocky Mtn Natl Park is definitely a must see though!!! |

I want to probably just hike a little past timberline. See what wildflowers I might find, a couple scenery shots, something along those lines. Nothing too crazy. |

I totally understand, I've did some other 14ers and the experience is incredible. I just thought I'd give a proper warning, there's been more than a few bad happenings up there. People getting lost in the boulder fields, lightning strikes, falls and things like that.
As far as I know the main route is not technical, just do some research beforehand, carry the proper gear with you and be safe while you're up there. |

I've been to the tops of a few, and the thing that drives me crazy are the false summits. You think you are there, and then off in the distance is the real summit, and it just takes all the wind out of your sails.

It's been a really long time for me...I forgot all about the false summits! Yeah, they really do suck!!! Which ones have you done? |

I haven't done Longs Peak, but the idea intrigues me.
I really want to make this the summer of ghost towns, too, so St. Elmo is on my to-do list once we hit full on wildflower season. |

I know it's probably too late for drumming up more company, but there it is, just in case! We're meeting at the gate at 7am.

You will definitley want to "train" for Longs also. Most people will leave 2-3 Am to get up and back down before the afternoon. some really treacherous areas, also. A PA and MD in my ER were up last year and watched a guy with trekking poles on his pack, catch one on a bad part and fell right off. Luckily he ended up being ok after tumbling down a talus slope for 150 feet.
The hike up to Peacock lake isn't technical and not too bad. I started around 9am and was able to get up, check out the little lakes and waterfalls, shoot a bunch and back down by 4pm.

I'd be in for the next one. I have never been to a gtg, and I would definitely like to go see some ghost towns. Sounds like fun! |

I'm in for some Denver area GTGs :) I've been wanting to get to Chasm Lake on Long's and it would be great to have some fellow DPCers along. |

Nope, we were gone by 10am, so we didn't get caught in the heat at all.
