Two of my cheap Smith Victor 1500-Watt Thrifty Photofloods just flashed once and went off. Before I get into the details, my question is why did they do that? I don't want to do the same thing with my other light.

The details:

There is a bunch of stuff plugged in to different outlets in the room. The tv, vcr, dvd player, and comcast cable box are all plugged in to a surge protector that is plugged into the wall outlet. i then plugged one of my lights into that same wall outlet. across the room there is a lamp and two laptops plugged into another surge protector that is plugged into a different wall outlet. I plugged my second light into that wall outlet.

The lights worked fine at first. Then I turned them off for awhile so I could get everything I needed. I plugged my video camera into the tv and then turned one of my lights on, which is when it flashed once and burnt out. I figured it was a light bulb problem so I turned on my other one. Same thing.

Everything else (the tv, the lamp, the vcr, etc.) still work-just not the lights. Any ideas why and how to prevent this from happening again?

If I left anything out or you have any questions let me know. Thanks in advance.

how old were they? They could have just been a bit weak and that initial turn on killed them...weird that it would happen to both though.

When I first got my lights (el' cheapos too) I got them setup for a shoot at a church event the night before, turned them on for the first time and pop! the bulb blew...at 10pm! Augh where to find a new one at this hour?!? I ended up getting a couple 300watt ones from a store similar to Lowes. Not what I should have had but worked.

Hope it was just the bulbs and not something in your setup.

I'd check the voltage of the outlet.
