I'm planning a trip to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island this summer and would love some input from people who have been there of good areas to photograph. Thanks for your help! Happy New Year!

[PEI]I haven't been there for years but I do remember the beautiful coast line, beaches, boats, fishing boats, docks and the fantastic lobster. Oh and miles of potato fields.
[Nova Scotia] is bigger then I thought it would be. Shipyards, boats, water and great shopping in downtown. Lovely people.
In both areas and in-between head for any of the Provincial Parks. One of the best things in all of Canada..their parks are very nice. Have fun and take lots of photos.

We have several local DPC members out east. PM Jacko, he is in New Brunswick.

If time permits, do try to fit in a visit to Cape Breton Island as well. I especially recommend a visit to Fort Louisbourg, just a short hop over the causeway from the main island. The fort is an historical reconstruction of the original fort ( still under reconstruction ). The museum guides wear authentic period costumes and play the parts of real townsfolk from that era ( 18th century ). Even the food service is authentic to the time and season. Should be plenty of photo-ops as well.
No matter the time of year, bring warm clothing and be prepared for fog.
Enjoy.

I am from New Brunswick, but have been living in Nova Scotia since April of 2002. Since buying my camera in August 2002, I have slowly begun exploring the province for photo ops, mostly in and around the capital, Halifax.

The waterfront in Halifax is always good for interesting people and buildings. You can also go up Spring Garden Road, one of the busiest streets for pedestrians in Canada. On Spring Garden, you can also find the Public Gardens with tons of trees, flowers and baby ducks. Halifax is also home to the Citadel and its Clock Tower. There is also the Grand Parade where you can find City Hall. Other things not to miss are the Dingle Tower (no, I didn't make that up), Lawrencetown, Rainbow Haven and Martinique beaches

There are the two bridges crossing the harbour the Navy yards and private wharves and the commuter ferries that are a fun ride. If your lucky you may also see tall ships. There are powerboat and sailboat tours of the harbour that include sunset tours which are very nice I have been told.

Outside of town but relatively close are Peggy's Cove (A MUST for sunsets), Mahone Bay and Lunenberg (UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the Bluenose II). Basically anywhere off the main highways along the coasts are packed with photo ops. The coast is mostly rocky and rugged but you can find some awesome beaches in some areas. I keep finding all these really neat places on small gravel roads leading towards shore.

Like RonB said, weather can be variable so be prepared for almost anything. People are very friendly and you can get to know folks of English,Scottish,Irish and African descent and also the always friendly and fun-loving Acadians who came over from France back in the late 17th century.

Just went to Nova Scotia in August, myself. There are some pics in my album if you'd like to see them. Unfortunately it was incredibly foggy and rainy the entire week.

Halifax is a very nice city. It's right on the water. There's The Citadel (a fort), flower gardens (beautiful there!), and a Titanic Memorial or Museum (that I didn't get to see). The city is like being in Europe with the style of buildings and roads (to me anyway).

Peggy's Cove isn't very far from Halifax, eiter. Maybe 20-30 minutes. Peggy's Cove was a great place for pictures...the lighthouse, fishermens' shacks, lobster boats, other boats, piles of traps and anchors. Lotsa cool stuff.

Also, just below PEI near Moncton, New Brunswick there's a place called Hopewell Rocks. Unfortunately it was pouring rain the day I went so it wasn't very pretty at all. Hopefully you'd have better luck!

I think BeagleBoy lives in or near Halifax so you could also check with him on things to do and see.

I haven't been to PEI but my uncle has been many times and my neighbor went up that way in September as well. Her pictures showed a very beautiful place. As justine said, the coastlines in those areas are absolutely gorgeous. You shouldn't have to look hard to find a photo opporunity!

Also, be sure you have rooms reserved or get one early in the afternoon. It was a real pain in the...butt...trying to find a room! We drove for hours trying to find something. There was practically nothing on that stretch of highway from NB to NS. Finally found something an hour from Halifax at midnight!

Good luck. I look forward to seeing your pictures!

Edit: Oops! Looks like BeagleBoy was typing the same time as me. Good advice from him, too!

It's Kejimkujik. It's a local Mi'gmaq word meaning... get ready for it... swollen parts!
