so i decided to get the nikon 18-135mm lens for my camera, but then i saw that the new sigma lens 18-200mm lens with image stabilizer is out.
should i venture and get the sigman lens which is about 150$ more, or should i just stick to the nikon lens???
from reviews it seems that the regular sigma 18-200mm is not bad at all , but i am not sure how everything will work with that image stabilizer..
any thoughts or recomendations would be appreciated:)

What review on the original 18-200 Sigma have you seen compared to the nikon its complete garbage. Compared to the Tamron its so so. The nikon 18-200 would run 800-1000 so maybe the Nikon 18-135 will do ya.
Shot with that Canon 28-135 IS USM and its great, Would love if they had an 18-135 like nikon.

The nikon 55-200 VR is only $249 at Ritz... I like it and it works very well.

18-135 is a kit lens, and that should tell you a lot about its (lack of) quality. That's not saying it's terrible, but it's far from the best thing going. |

And what do they kit it with? Hmm D80...
Looking at the review at 18mm it has a 3.3% barrel distortion which clears up before 35mm from 35-135 is smooth. The Tamron 18-250 has a 4% barrel distortion clears up before 35mm and is clear to 250 although not so sharp in the corners past 200.
Nikkor AF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED DX Review / Test Report
Described as Medium Build Quality that of above a kit lens. But as far as optical id say it looks slightly better or around the same. People hear kit lens and fringe. Its a consumer lens just because it comes in a kit doesnt mean shit. Canon release a USM kit lens and it was actually good glass the later models reverted to kit lens build and glass.

i am actually looking for the wide angle mainly , i was planning to get the sigma 10-20mm, but then again i realized that i have to invest in a something between 28 and 90 (which is what i have but is very very very bad (quantaray))
accordingly i was considering the 18-70 mm which according to reviews does not have barel distortion, but the 18-135 has longer range with some barel distortion at the wide angle part.
i took a shot at that angle with it , ( the transition challange) and it was not that bad.
but then looking at the sgiman i get more zoom, AND optical stabilization so i am not sure...

Hassan - looking at your profile it looks like you may have already bought the 18-135 so I'll just make my comments for the next purchase.
As a rule of thumb anytime you get a zoom lens that is more than 3x you will be making some compromises. The extent depends on the amount of range and the quality of manufacture. If you need wide angle and want it to be of the best quality then stick with a prime lens or one in the zoom range of 10-20mm or 12-24mm. Same goes for the long end. That is why you see the 70-200mm lenses by both Canon and Nikon so highly rated.
Eventually we all gravitate to better glass so it is best to buy it up front. Glass will last a lifetime vs bodies that change out on occasion.
Good luck.
edit: to answer the question about the Sigma I would say no, do not switch. Wait until you want to make the jump to better glass and then consider stabiliztion along with whatever you pick as the range.

Uhh....actually, no it wasn't at its inception, it's just being offered regularly as a kit lens now.
You can get the 18-200 VR as a "kit" lens too if you buy it at the right place.
Just out of curiosity, what's supposedly wrong with kit lenses anyway?
The 18-70 I got with my D70s is lovely, and I have gotten some really exquisite stuff with it.
I know that we're talking lower end lenses than some of the serious glass that Nikon makes, but it sure beats the heck out of all the aftermarket stuff I've seen.

It's a good walk around lens. I do wish it was wider.

The nikkor 18-135mm is a nice lens, but it has a few problems:
1. Plastic mount - that's newer good to stat with.
2. No focus scale.
3. Build quality is quite poor.
IMO the Nikkor 18-70mm is a better lens. |
