Well, after have many weeks of fun here, I received my first DQ. It was in a basic editing challenge and I was accused of creating an HDR (out of a single JPG?) and also of doing advanced editing. I think my only crime was overdoing shadows in the photo and tweaking contrast too much. It was scoring a solid 5.0 or so, which hardly made it in danger of winning a ribbon.
So, when they asked me for my editing commands, I gave it to them. I never write them all down (maybe that is a lesson?), but I gave them the overall flow. I also submitted (twice), my original picture. Well, they said the JPG was not the original. What? I take my card from the camera, put it in my computer, Adobe downloads it and places it into a folder and I work from there. I never edit the original, I make a copy and work from the copy. But, it seems that since Adobe touched the file, it changed the EXIF and, BOOM!, there is my DQ. At least that is how I think it happened.
Man, what a bummer.

Search for threads, tutorials and info in the rules section about maintaining the "Original" file. If they DQ it, get over it - it's not a big deal unless you make it one. And it doesn't matter if it was about to ribbon or not.
To avoid in the future, turn on your History log in photoshop and keep the ORIGINAL original in tact.
Again, don't sweat it - nobody will burn your village. :D
edit to add the overlooked sympathy. :( Sorry it happened to you.

I always transfer my pictures using a card reader and into a file marked August Originals. This way it is still a tru original. |

Jeff, you weren't accused of anything. The photo was brought up for validation, and you submitted a JPG original. I don't doubt that the proof file you submitted was an original, but you used Elements to transfer the photo from the camera to the computer. Using transfer software such as Elements changes one of the dates in the EXIF data, and as a consequence we can't accept such a file as an original, because we have no way to know if you did anything to the file other than just transfer. Not "you" in particular, but "you" in general.
For JPGs, the best way for our purposes is to simply copy/paste images from the card to the computer.
Overall you're better off shooting RAW, as a RAW file cannot be modified and will be an original regardless of how you transfer it to the computer. Shooting RAW has other advantages also.
You might want to refer to this thread for more information.
I'm sorry your image was disqualified. Believe me, you're not the first person this happens to. Please think of it as part of the learning process at DPC. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your images in future challenges. :)

Is this a problem particluar to Elements? I download my photos vis USB to my computer and then my Elements 3.0 photo browser launches. I use it to go through and delete the ones I do not want and then use regular Photoshop to edit my photos. They are stored in a dated folder. I shoot in JPEG not Raw because I am more comfortable (experienced) with that. I have not been challenged on any photos yet but wanted to find out should that happen. Thank you for a reply. [/url] |
