I've never had a job that afforded me the ability to buy the things I want until recently. I've always wanted to get a nicer camera and really have enjoyed my Canon cameras (my first digital a Canon Powershot A20, then an A80, then my current A95, and I bought a 1D-Mark I for work which is what got me hooked on SLRs).
I think I've decided on a camera (Rebel XTi) but think that down the road, if I take to it to a higher level, I will get a 40D or 5D (or whatever is the next step). My concern though is, are all the lenses that work on the STi non-compatible on the full frame cameras? From what I can tell, I think I'm stuck to the 20-40D with most of these lenses, but there's a wealth of knowledge here that vastly exceeds my own so we'll see.
My question is, beside a decent flash, the battery grip, and a high speed flash card (133x 4gb), what lenses can/should I get for the XTi that will be compatible with the bigger cameras as well? I will shoot almost everything, and while I won't spend $800+ on lenses yet, a 17-85 IS isn't out of reach. I was thinking of the following:
* a good 18-55-ish for wide angle work (sigma 18-50 f/2.8?)
* a good walk around (Canon 17-85 IS?)
* a decent zoom (Sigma 18-200 f/3.5 or a 50-200 f/4?)
If possible though, I would like to buy lenses that work across the board so if/when I do upgrade, I can use my old kit. Thanks for letting me ramble, here's a few pics from the past...

| If you want your lenses to span across Canon full framed and cropped sensors, you'll want to say away from EF-S lenses. These lenses only work with the 1.6 crop bodies. |

I prefer Canon lenses over 3rd party but these are the EF-S lenses that are only compatible with the 30D, 20D and Digital Rebel series digital cameras...and I am sure the 40D when it is released.
Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
Canon Normal EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
The only EF-S lens that I could not live without is the 10-22mm.
If I ever go FF, which I probably won't for a long time, I'd sell the 10-22 and buy the 17-40. Seriously, the 10-22 is worth it.
If you want to be able to use all your lenses on a FF camera, don't buy these.

Any lens that has an EF mount will fit a full frame camera. EF-S lenses only fit some cameras.
Also, watch for lenses that are designed for the smaller sensor. These will still mount to a full frame camera but will vignette.
The 17-85 lens you mention I believe is an EF-S lens. That won't work on a full frame camera like the 5D. |

| If you are used to a pro camera like a 1D, than a small camera like the Rebel will drive you insane. The Canon EF-S lenses will not work on a full-frame camera. |

| So in effect, if I buy EF Lenses only, I'm good up to full frame for the most part? I will do my research per lens of course, but that's the gist of it? Thanks! |

No not used to them (I'm actually familiar with the A95), I just have shot the 1D before (too heavy really for me to enjoy). I like the idea of having a lighter body for field work and keeping it in the car or with me at all times. |

That's right. They won't work on 10D bodies and ealier. There's a trick you can do that involves a saw, but would you really want to use a saw on a $500 item?
