I shot a charity golf tournament over the weekend and need a way for the participants to view and purchase prints of the group / team photos. I have a Shutterfly account I was going to use as a nearly last resort, but it doesn't allow me to restrict the print sizes they can order and it crops for 4x6 as the default and I sized them for 8x10 and the customer would have to muck with the settings for any other size.
Does anyone know a good website with the following capabilities:
- I can create an account for free
- I can create collections of photos to sell to a specific (invited) audience
- I can restrict or define the print sizes allowed to be ordered
- I can set the price and include a margin
- I can easily upload batches of large images
- Good quality prints & reasonable prices
Or does anyone have an opinion or experience with Shutterfly? Maybe it's the best option.
thanks in advance... |

hey Ken, I can't attest to actually how good it is, I havn't actually used it yet :-) but,...I set up an account at dotphoto.comfor just that reason, I actually heard fotoman forever refer to it a bit while back. I'm not sure if it entirely meets all your requirements, but I know it looks like it would do most, from what I saw. It is free though, so you could at least check it out. I think you'll want to click on their 'professional' section to get set up, if I remember it correctly. Let me know how it goes, if you check it out. |

I went with Fototime I can do exactly what you want to do. The fees are very reasonable and they show a cost breakdown versus some of the others. I have received prints from them and it comes on a nice Kodak Paper. You can set your own prices, and they offer other items like canvas prints, mouse pads, shirts, coffe mugs, etc....
Set up was easy, you can have your own URL, or you can have your own web page as a front end and use them as the back end for ordering the photos. |

Thanks for all the recommendations! I think I'll compare them all for what I need and will post how it turns out. |

re-read my post, and I need to clarify-
I did not set it up for 'JUST that reason', I mean, I did NOT go and shoot a charity golf tournament over the weekend....but, well....ahh, you know what I mean!!!errrrrgggg .$^ ..*** :-) :-) :-) |

The Shutterfly Pro account lets you pick sizes and fix the cropping issue, but its $100 a year. I find it worth it if its used all the time and I can make my $ back and then some.
I can vouch for the quality of the printing though, all the way up to 20x30.

I used photoreflect when I first started and it worked well for a long time. It looks more professional than a lot of the other sites in my opinion. Plus, when you use shutterfly or dotphoto, your customers can see exactly what you are paying for the prints and they know they are not coming from a pro lab.

Hey, don't forget to let us know your assessments Ken...you know, for those of us that are interested, but too lazy to research ourselves :-P |

I'm actually still going through this debate. Here are some that I have found so far:
smugmug.com - Very reasonable prices for a pro account when compared to the other players. I believe their printer is the same as the one used by dpchallenge. This is my choice for davidnusbaum.com until a better option comes along.
Photoreflect - Free, but if you add up the charges they take a pretty good percentage of your earnings. Might be great if you don't do this frequently, but I think you'll get tired of giving them their cut if you sell a lot throughout the year.
Pictage - A little expensive and pushy for my taste plus I don't like that they are the lab as well.
seeyourphotos.net - I didn't like that client/customers could not do their own crop and it's a little expensive.
Not quite there, but a lot of potential
Zenfolio - They are working on the pro side now, but I really like the ability to choose between ezprints or mpix as my lab.

I'm currently using PhotoReflect, but Have not uploaded anything to it in a long time. I have a wedding I need to up load and the last time I did upload for selling online I used EZ Prints, but it doesn't seem that PhotoReflect uses them any more. I need suggestions on a lab to use. I live in NC if that helps.
Thanks,
Terry |

I couldn't agree with that more.
I am so sick of "Glen from Pictage" calling me and emailing me.
At least he stopped calling after telling him I'm not interested. |

Haven't tried mpix yet, but I have been considering it for a similar purpose. |

Exactly what I wanted Ken. I just upgraded my Smugmug to pro to do that. It is a tad expensive though at $149 (the old $99 price again would be a sweet sale). I thought the Power accounts were a good price, but it's a big jump to the pro. And then the do still charge you 5% or so above base price on the prints you sell.
But I never looked into the others, since I already had a power account when I was upgrading. |

I have not found a better deal than smugmug after a lot of looking, so at this point you have saved a lot of wasted time. Zenfolio is the one that I'm watching to see how strong their 'pro' service is when introduced.
