I have a canon s3 is and have been trying to take pictures of my girls playing volleyball in the school gym. They turn out really blurry. What is the best setting to use for this, and should I get a tripod to stablize the camera? |

I'd use Shutter Priority and set it fast enough to freeze the action. The aperture will adjust as needed to compensate. If the aperture can't go wide enough automatically try moving the ISO higher until you reach a combination that will work.
Of course there may be simpler ways like using a Sports Action mode if you have that available, or perhaps Program mode?
Good luck (I'm sure someone with a bonafide answer will appear soon). :D |

I have an S2 and unless it's very very very bright. Action shots will be blurry. Basically if you are outside you are golden.

Are the players in motion or is the entire image blurry?
What ISO was the camera set at?
One thing you will want to try taking the photos as the highest ISO possible. I believe the S3 can handle up to ISO800 without to much issue. In addition, the S3 should have a 'sports' setting that will make sure the camera is firing at the fastest shutter speed possible to reduce motion.
The key thing that you can do with the S3 is to boost that ISO and find a steady surface to shoot from - i.e. monopod.
Good luck! |

I will play with the Iso and shutter speed. The auto setting for sports doesnt work correctly. I will also make the camera stationary to get a better shot. Thanks for the advice. |

IMHO you are a bit under equipped to shoot volleyball. If you look at the sports shooting thread here you will see the results from my shoot last night for the paper. IMHO you need high ISO and flash(if allowed) last night the refs didnt want flash and its their option to ask that it not be used. You are going to have to go to full manual high iso and at least 1/400th to get anything usable besides shots sitting still. NOrmally with flash I would shoot ISO 1600 F2.8 1/500th with some + FC in the shot, without ISO 3200 F2.8 1/400th if possible. You might look into a digital SLR that will handle ISO to 1600 and a fast lens. You can likely pick up a used nikon or canon and a 50 1.8 or similar lens to shoot with.
