I think it's getting near time to put the 10D into retirement. It's been a great camera, but it's aging technology and frankly, I need something better.

I have lenses I like well enough that the upgrade to a 40D would seem a no brainer. However, Canon has failed to address what I consider some serious flaws in the design of their DSLR's (at least below the 1 series). Add to that the emergence of the D300, and well, I have to say I'm tempted to switch over.

A couple of the things about the D300 that make it sound better than the 40D:

100% viewfinder - I want the image I record to be the one I see in the camera. I hate it when I crop something out in the viewfinder, only to have it show up in the image anyway. Yes, it's possible to crop in PS or some other sofware, but that just effectively lowers the camera's resolution. BAH!

51pt AF system - I've come to hate the 6 pt layout on the 10D, since none of the AF pts ever seem to be where they're needed. And yes, it's possible to focus, recompose and then shoot, but why? I also don't see the 9pt arrangement on the 40D as much of an improvement.

Hmmmm.

I just recently upgraded from the 10D to the 30D, about two weeks before the 40D came out. I loved the 10D, but the 30D is a huge improvement. I kept my 10D as a backup and the controls are so similar that I can move between cameras without even thinking about it.

At the same time, I was a Nikon guy back when the F3 was king and I'm thrilled to see this new line of cameras from them. I would have no problem changing sides if/when that switch in my head flips to say the Nikon will work better for me.

well I can only say that my dreams of switching to a 5D have since left me with the announcement of the new Nikon stuff.
That and my roommate who has 2 mark 2's, 16-35, 70-200, 24 1.4 and a range of other high grade canon is always wishin his lenses were as sharp as mine =)~.

if you have old manual focus lenses too, they work amazingly and are still some of the sharpest around.

I used to have a lot of high end Nikkor AI lenses for my F3's, but, when I bought my 10D, I sold them. I was going to buy the D100 and keep my Nikkors, but they would not work with the D100.

I still miss my 105mm f1.8...

Well, only you can answer the question of whether the upheaval and cost of switching is worth it to you.

I reckon whichever side of the fence you're on you will always see features on the other side you wish you had.

It's perhaps worth bearing in mind that Canon view the 5D as their competition in the D200/D300 sector - and it seems the 5D is likely to be replaced in the new year. Certainly I'd be tempted to see what the replacement offers before making a final decision.

And who said anything about a dark side? Competition is a glorious thing :).

It all depends on which side of the fence you're currently on.

I think you'd be fine either way.

I must ask, why is Nikon always referred as the "Dark side"?
10/03/2007 06:40:50 AM · #12
because currently Canon has the lion's share of the market. Nikon is the 'underdog'.

Many people head straight to the Canon line even when this does not necessarily match their needs best. I helped a guy a few weeks ago and recommended that he purchase a K10D and a 16-45 f/4 lens as he liked to do landscapes. He ended up with a 400XTi and a kit 18-55mm lens.

It was the salesman at the counter that persuaded him. He saved a little money by spending less, but also received rather less.

In Star Wars, the Dark Side is visibly stronger than the other side and gets to do much more nifty stuff like lightning blasts and strangling by thought. Power is gathered much more quickly...

Nikon users like to identify with this for some unexplained reason... maybe this has to do with the color of lenses?

Because the D3 is the "death star" of DSLRs?

It's not yet fully operational, but when it is, it will destroy everything! :-P
