So, would you rather have
a) a high (relatively speaking) score, and few, if any, comments
b) a mediocre score, but a lot of comments
no other options for this game :-) |

That depends on the kinds of comments.
I'd take the high score. |

High score! Those high numbers would be comment enough for me. |

An 8 score and 0 comments would be fine by me

The higher your score the more comments you get after the challenge is over! I'd go 4 the high score & get more comments after voting is over. It's a win, win!

A high score and I don't care how many comments, LOL. After all it is a competition. |

b) but I might change my mind after reading them. b) is at least familiar territory, while option a) carries with it the fear of the unknown .... |

If you get a high score you normally get a load of comments, can be similar with a very low score. If its a 4 or 5 average then you will probably just get a few comments.

That's why I said "relatively high." I have two pictures receiving scores right now. One is mediocre (but climbing :-)) with a lot of comments. The other is not incredibly high, but satisfactory with very few comments. I'm not sure which I am preferring.
I think I will go with Konador on this one. Just give me tens and don't worry about the comments. :-P |

This is entirely true!!! As opposed to the rules where if you give a low score to a photograph you should comment on it. I've noticed that high score pictures usually receive lots of comments during the challenge and after the challenge. I've also noticed that all good photographers, the ones we look up to, only comment on excellent shots, thus denying the people that are learning the benefit of their expertise. It's true that you learn from observation alone, but it would be great to see what all the blue ribbon winners think of how could low rated photographs improve. |

This is true, i too wold like to see some expert critique.
But I think the most recent blue ribbon winner (Gordon) summed it up by saying most people don't want negative critique.

Well... If I want to improve and learn from my mistakes, I have to learn to face them. The only way I know of doing that is someone to point them out to me.
I'd rather have comments like "your composition sucks because you missed the right angle", or "that's a poor aproach of your subject, could be better like this..." or "you could improve your lighting by adding a light source from x angle".... than having a 4.xx score and not knowing why!!!!

EXACTLY! Of course learning from comments is a good thing, too, but it your score is already high, it would seem that you have learned alot already. |

Being new at this I would like to have constructive comments, ones that help me to learn how to correct and impove. So far the ones I've gotten have been constructive but nothing explaining how to get the better photo. I'm excited about learning but a novice. High scores are great but not many I see get high scores, so I hope they help the newbees. |

I agree that the best way to improve and learn is from mistakes. But I've come to realise from the number of threads started lambasting people who do leave honest opinions on the bad pictures (yes bad pictures do exist - it isn't an elitist attitude to acknowledge that) that you are in a minority for wanting honest feedback.
So I don't tend to hand it out here because the prevailing mood is that it isn't welcome.
To the original question:
I'd rather have a fair score and just one insightful comment, than many pointing out the same obvious thing or making the same superficial suggestion.
I'm happy to get one good comment on every picture I enter
