What the...
The 50mm 1.8D worked like a charm on my D50, super sharp, contrasty, and little or no CAs. (campared to the 12-24mm Tokina, which was horrible sometimes)
Now it seems they have switched.. the 50mm 1.8D has horrible CAs at all apertures and the Tokina has none!
Heck, my 18-55mm DX lens seems sharper too!

Perhaps, more resolution is revealing some flaws with the lens? Or the built in auto CA correction is too aggressive?

BTW...
I think this is my only complaint so far about this camera....
Otherwise this camera is a beast!!!!! (in a good way)

Forgive me, but what does CA stand for?

Chromatic aberration;

Chromatic Aberation... not words I wanted to hear in terms of the 50 1.8 or the D300.

Have you experimented with the individual lens adjustment, CA correction, and other image settings? Is there any way that this is being introduced in software, instead of an actual optical problem?

doesn't do it on my D50 so, and yet the tokina (that's known for it's CAs) did.
And it doesn't seem to be an adjustment for the Auto CA correction. I have played with what ever picture controls I could.
I am guessing it's just the lens. Because, none of my other lenses seem to have the same issue.

raw or jpeg?

Can you show us a sample?

The D200 like the D300 is less forgiving of many things...inexpensive lenses, bad technique etc. but I'd still wait a few days and figure out the camera before you judge.

I might get one tomorrow. I'd rather get the D3 but that's a big chunk of change. I'm interested in the new D300 for it's sensor and the noise response. Still haven't seen much on the net about noise but I'm betting it's respectable.

Have you run a few noise tests yet?

Both, less so with JPEG.

And doing a little pixel peeping, I have find that stopping down reduces the CA's a little. But still noticeable.

I haven't really ran any "lab, or official" tests. But it seems as though ISO 800 is better than 400 from the D50 (in real world photos). That coming from the D50, is a really good thing.

On, another note, for those that are looking for reviews on the net and seeing complaints about posterization from their from the D300. It is cause by the aggressive in-camera sharpening, turn it off or 1. This fixes that issue.
