So... I set up a workgroup between my laptop and my desktop using a crossover cable so I could move my photos from Maui to the desktop easily. Well...... as I was moving them... my finger slipped off the mouse button... and now I cant find the photos ANYWHERE!!!

I have searched both computers for the file names..... nothing.... Some of my favorite photos I have ever taken.... Im just sick!

Any ideas what I can try???

You did look in the recycle bin on the laptop right?

R.

Incidentally, when I am moving stuff to my external hard drive I always right-button-drag and choose "copy". After I have confirmed successful transfer I delete from the source drive.

reasonably they shouldn't have been lost - the question is where are they . .

I did somwething similar not so long ago when I was just moving two photo's and it took me ages to find them because they had ended up in a bizarre place.

You could try doing a search on all your CRW files and see the various locations your pc finds them in. Most will be where you expect, and the rest will hopefully be your missing ones.

Go onto search and put *.crw

Best of luck

The files wouldn't just disappear. They have landed in whatever folder your mouse was over at the time of the right finger slip. This could be anything from the C:\ drive to the system folder or to any other folder on either hard drive. I would suggest recreating the scenario and using some newly created file and while dragging, let go and see where it lands.

It is like dropping an earing and not finding it. Drop the other one from the same approximate place and it should bounce pretty much the same way and lead you to the other one.

Somewhere on your computers the files still exist. The search for one of the file names on either computer should resolve the problem of where they went. A safer way to copy them is to right click - copy - go to the place you want to save them and right click - paste. I hope this helps.

Have you searched the desktop? You may be looking on the wrong 'puter. ;)

One thing, do NOT use left mouse button when you copy or move items within the file manager windows. NEVER! Left mouse button is our enemy in those areas.

Second, if you think you made a move accidently and can't find where it went, use menu option "edit/undo(action)" it's either copy, or move.

Remember, never ever use left button to copy or move stuff, always right mouse button and have menu come up for you to select what you want to do rather than windows doing it for you. If you cancel the action you can always click anywhere else to cancel the copy or move.

Also it might be off the desktop. If you have too many icons on your desktop right click mouse>arrange icons by>modified.... and the last items that went onto the desktop would be near the end.

Also, make sure it's searching hidden files.

Wasn't there a Star Treck episode where they lost some people while they were transporting them to another ship to to the planet? I think it was the same thing, the tranportor tech's finger slipped off the mouse during transport and it took them the whole hour to get them back. But just in case, don't disconnect the cables. If they are stuck in there, you don't want them spilling out on the floor. :D

If you know a file name, do a search that way and see if it comes up and where it's at. That's where they should all be.

That's why I always Right click and drag, so it prompts you. That way you can also specify copy or move. Just to be safe.

I would think that the files cannot just completely vanish without several linked mouse actions. They are in there somewhere. You may also try to remember what you had open at the time the problem occurred. You may have just hidden them somewhere in a program that has to be open in order to find them, like an editing program.
I put up with a PC laptop, my son's, when I travel, and I have learned to keep the camera output as a disc drive, then transfer the files directly to a folder in the laptop, keeping their camera ID#s that way. I also back them up on an external hard drive, doing both transfers at the same time. The external allows me to easily upload the files directly into my Mac when I return home because they are in the original camera's format. I also keep the laptop, and the external HD in different pieces of luggage when traveling, just in case one or the other is lost, damaged or stolen.
I hope that you soon find your missing files. Keep us posted, and good luck.

Windows can delete files during a move. If it thinks it's sending it to a valid folder it will send them and delete from the source location. If it turns out that it wasn't a valid folder, then they could disappear.

But, even though they are deleted from the source drive they are still there. Before you go any further, do not write anything to your source computer. On the other computer do a search for un-delete programs. Or go to the computer store that has software and look for one. You will want to run un-delete on the original folder they were in, which should recover them. Should as it usually does, but sometimes it doesn't. It's important though that you don't write to the drive or you might over write a spot where one of the deleted files sits, making it impossible to recover it. If the file area has not been written over, it is usually 100% that you can recover the files.

There are a number of un-delete programs out there, just make sure it works with your version of Windows. One that creates a work floppy or runs off a CD is much better as you don't want to have to install anything or you take the chance of overwriting the files.

What about system restore to a point before the oops?
12/23/2007 12:32:24 AM · #21
OUCH! Why is it always the irreplaceable vacation pics?? Maybe the crossover cable leaked - did you look on the floor or between the couch cushions? ;-)

Seriously-- as stated, don't use the computer the files were on and get an undelete app to find and restore them.

...or look for a good deal on flights to Maui and reshoot. Frankly, that's what I would want to do. :)

Hope it works out. :(

Make sure the files were on there at your last restore point! What about the card? Already overwrote?

I figured out what I did.... but still havent found the files.....

While connected via crossover cable, using mshome workgroup....

I opened Acdsee 6.0 and dragged the file from the laptop to the "shareddocs" on the desktop computer..... I didnt put them in a specified folder like "shared pictures".... then POOF.... gone from the laptop/unable to locate on the desktop.

The previous file I dropped into the "shared Pictures" folder is fine and dandy......

sigh.... closer to nothing :P
