Anyone going to this from the East Anglia region? Or perhaps from the Ipswich area? Trains from Norwich on the 16th of March are being stopped in Ipswich, with travelers then bussed to Marks Tey, and then back onto the train into Liverpool Street Station. Total trip is 2 hours 42 minutes.

If anyone is driving from East Anglia or Norwich and wants to share a ride (and get some cash for petrol), I'm game. Otherwise the nearly three hour trip each way might be a bit of a spoiler for me :/ I know, I'm a wimp.

Anyone?

Have not been in this thread for a while (busy busy). Rob, I'm going down to London the week before but hope to make the 16th as well. I may well drive now you told me about the trains however you might want to bring a hat!

Andi, let me know once you've decided for sure if you're going to go. I have a hat, so that wouldn't be a problem (so long as the recent near freezing morning temperatures are gone by mid-March). And you'd have a choice between a fuel contribution (ought to cost about ten sunflower seeds down to London and back to feed the gerbil that runs that thing, right? :P ) or a financial contribution to your August Rally fund-raising (which you'll probably get anyway, so it's not much of a choice, really).

I'll keep looking for other options along the way in case you decide to give it a miss.

Best,

Rob

So just to confirm, it's now definitely the 16th March? Do we know where we're meeting, and when?
How exciting :)

Ah... so tempting, look like I may have bring along my n00bishness to join the fun :)

Shall have to figure out if the trains are actually working from Cambridge though, sounds like they are breaking things again...

I must admit 10am will be a bit of a challenge for me (too early for this nocturne) but I'll do my best...otherwise I'll get someone's mobile number and catch up en route, or maybe when you stop for lunch..?

Fingers crossed that they are as my plan is to drive down to Cambridge and get the train on the Saturday, stay with my daughter, and get the train into London on Sunday morning!

Dain, it would be cool to meet you again.

Talj, for the trains, a friend confirmed that her train to London passed through Tonbridge so if you let me know what time yours departs from there I can try to get into the same one.

I have a rough route planned out already, maybe I could put a google earth tour together so you can see how slick it is and how all the sections are very close to each other. So, here goes..

Start at London Eye.
Go Past London Aquarium (Old City Hall)
Across Westminster Bridge to
Houses of Parliament/Parliament Square/Big Ben/Westminster Abbey
Up Whitehall, inc Downing Street, The Cenotaph, Horseguards etc.
Trafalgar Square, - Nelsons Column, stunning architecture, National Portrait Gallery.
Head down The Mall - Admiralty Arch
Into Hyde Park, Horseguards Parade etc
Buckingham Palace
Birdcage walk/Hyde Park
The Treasury building.
Back into Parliament Square.

The whole route is a little under 3 miles, and if we start early enough we could even end the day with a trip on the river down to Tower Bridge/Tower of London, only costs a fiver or so.
Loads of photo ops, a few pubs, plenty of places to sit and have a rest. I'll throw the idea out now, give us some time to get names together. Maybe even give some non-brit DPCers a chance to organise a short break over here.

Anyway, willl leave it at that for the time being.. any up for it?

Like I mentioned earlier, trains on Sundays are bad news ! However I may need a little guidance as to where to travel to so I can meet on route. From Reading I can do any of the main London train stations, not certain which would be the best bet so any advice would be most welcome.

thanks
Mike

Mike, as I said earlier in the thread we are going to Waterloo. From Waterloo it is a 5 minute walk, or 10 is you are slow like me!! to the Eye. I have been looking at booking a flight on the Eye for later in the afternoon?? Not sure what time we will get back there tho. You are welcome to join us:)

I'm in for the GTG on Sunday (though someone will have to drink my share of the beer for me) and I'm also looking for recommendations of other places to visit/things to see and do since I'll be there for about five days of vacation ("on holiday" I think it is, yes?). I've added Cambridge to the mix for a day and am thinking of adding a seaside location, though yes, I realize the weather isn't all that lovely for seaside locations in March. Any and all suggestions appreciated!

Canterbury is supposed to be nice.. I think Gloda knows a bit about that as he is at Uni there, seaside? ummm, you could always do Canterbury/Dover in the same day, lots to see do there and of course those famous cliffs..

Cambridge is a great place to visit, especially if you like buildings/architecture as there is a mix of old and new all over. It also manages to keep a good amount of green spaces and parks and punting on the river is a great cliché to enjoy.

If you want a tour guide, lemme know.

I think we maybe need to have a Cambridge GTG at some point! I am always looking for an excuse to visit...

Are you going back on Sunday? Maybe I'll go with you! And I'm thinking of heading to Cambridge on Tuesday - wanna go? Gonna pester Jelena. :-) Oh, and if you don't want to go back on Sunday evening, let me know and I'll get a double room for that night and you can stay in London with me.

Howdy, is anyone going to this from Manchester i could car pool/travel up with? If you're driving i'll pay towards fuel, and possibly get you a pint.

It would interesting to see a list of all those who are going? Would give an old codger like me a chance to try and memorise faces and names!
02/26/2008 05:57:50 PM · #175
If everyone goes who says they are going it could well be one of the biggest UK ones yet! However from past experience I would expect 25% or so not to turn up, sometimes these things cant be helped..

By the way, check out the new camera under my name :)
