hello, im in the NYC area and i am looking for a Nikon D50 kit in the range of $550-$700 max. I've searched such stores like bestbuy, circuit city, pcrichards, j&r, ect... but none of these places seem to have it. I am guessing the D40 has replaced it because the sellers recommend this to me instead. after months of debating i finally decided on which camera to buy and now i cant even find a store that carries it!

Does anyone know of any place that carries the D50? Any help appreicated! Thanks in advanced!

btw i hope i didnt post this in the wrong section sorry ><

Surprisingly, most retailer did exactly what you say even though the D40 is a major step down. I doubt you'll find it anywhere except Ebay. Even B&H doesn't carry them.

Rumor says a new 'D90' or whatever will be coming to market in a quarter or two. You might get a D80 cheaper then.

Hmmm... Wikipedia states the D40 replaced the D50. Interesting/scary.

You can probably find a good used D70 or D70s with kit lens for well under your price range. A lot of them out there with little use...new unused ones popup from time-to-time too (I picked up a new D70s kit w. lens for $650 last May in a clearence sale). New ones are very hard to find now though. (new D50's will be dificult to find too)

The D70/s has a number of features over the D50, and is just a bit bigger (I like the feel of the bigger D70...actualy like the feel better than the smaller/lighter D80 too). Main benifits of the D70/s IMO: 2 command dials (faster manual settings), DOF Preview (a must for macro), Led gridlines in viewfinder (useful for learning 3rd's rule, and getting horizontal and vertical lines streight), slightly faster FPS (3fps vs 2.5), top LED screen backlight, wider angle built-in flash (18mm vs 20mm), and the D70/s built in flash can be wireless commander for SB600/SB800 remote flashes. The D70s can use a cable shutter remote, the D50 and original D70 can not. They can all use the IR remote though. Google "D50 vs D70s" for lots of reviews and postings discussing the differences/benifits.

thanks to you both! and yes i was afraid of that, d40 replacing the d50. i was also looking into the d80 but i figured since it was currently in the $1000s price range id have to wait a while for the prices to come down.
i also looked into the d70 and was contemplating between the two but after reading some reviews, ive heard the d50 image quality over all was equal to/better than the d70. but i guess id have to see for myself.
i tried ebay as well but i am always afraid that people will sell me a broken camera even if they say it is perfectly working and such...

has anyone bought a new/used d50, d70, or d80 off of ebay? were the prices good and did you get what you expected?

thanks again everyone :)

I won't be surprise if they announce a D60 in the next couple days.

D60 or D90? I'd thought I'd heard D90 this Spring-ish.

D60 to replace the D40X and the D90 to replace the D80. Announcement might not not mean immediate available though.

Wow. Already replacing the D40 line? Crazy.

wow that is really quick. i wish they didnt have to "replace" the older models.

what do you all perfer out of the d50, d70, d70s, or d80?
im really leaning towards the d80 if i find a reasonable price.

As far as I know the sensor and processor is the same in the D50 vs D70...so IQ should be about the same (some reviews claim slightly lower noise at high ISO for the D50). However seeing as there is minimal diference im price for these used bodies, I think the added features of the D70s gives the best bang for the buck. IMHO (a bit biased, since that was my choice)

As for new model speculation...that is all it is so far...something will be announced by Nikon in February probably an entry/mid level SLR maybe 2, but the exact details will not be known until the announcement, and historicaly speculation is prety far off (on the bright side the D3 exceeded the expectations most speculators)...and it usualy takes Nikon 6+ months to get a new SLR into general avaiability after an announcement. (so don't hold your breath for the new models)

It is funny people are speculating on the successor of the D40 to be the D60...the same speculation was made with regards to the D50's successor...which ended up being the D40. Why? Because Canon already had a dSLR called the "D60" (predecessor to the 10D). Maybe enough time has passed for Nikon to use that model number now...?? The biggest negitive for the D40 IMO, is that it can only AF with an AF-S lenses...I wonder if they will add the body motor back so that it can use standard AF lenses...I doubt it tho. Probably not much demand for this from the majority (not all) of D40 level users...small and light > ability to use of old AF lenses. Maybe some more/new AF-S lenses instead? (baseless addition to to the speculation and rumor!) ;-)

funny thing, i came this close to buying a D40 the other day. i agree that probably the lack of built in AF and the lenses itself would probably turned me off from it.

But recently ive found a used D70 for $530 and a D80 for roughly the same price. So im wondering which way i should go? Ive read reviews and they mostly say if you own a D70 already then it isnt worth the upgrade. But since i have neither the 4mp difference on the D80 is really tempting me. Though i know it wouldnt make much of a difference.
Any opinions greatly appreciated! thanks again :)

The D80 is a far better camera in so many ways.

If the there is little difference in price get the D80! (assuming it is in as good condition as the D70)

See this review for a side-by-side compair between D80 and D70s: //www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD80/

Note that the only place the D70s is better is on max shutter speed (1/8000 vs 1/4000) and max flash sync (1/500 vs 1/200). Not sure why those two downgraded on the D80, but they are probably advantages that mean nothing to 99% of photographers. (maybe advantagious for humming bird fanatics...??) ;-) The D80 has improvements in almost every other catagory though. (I personaly would not upgrade my D70s to a D80 if I had to pay the difference, but I would choose the D80 in a streight swap)

I dunno... a sync speed difference like that is HUGE if you want to get into strobes.... If you think that is a chance then you are far better off with 1/500.... My canon is stuck in 1/250 and it's a pain sometimes.

I finally decided on the D70. Since the D80 deal was too good to be true i figured it was a scam. I was also looking at the D70s but since the upgrades were so minuscule i decided an extra 200 wasnt worth the cost of a bigger screen.

But thank you everyone for all the great help and accompanying me through what seemed like a journey!

If in NYC check out B&H Photo - they have used equipment that they certify and the best legitimate prices on new US equipment around (along with Adorama).

Congratulations on the purchase! A good and well thought-out choice.

Looking forward to seeing some DPC entries from you in the near future. :-)
