hi. i own an olympus c-3020z 3.2 megapixel digital camera. my goal is to get a close up of the moon to see actual details of the moon. does anyone know if this is possible, what do i need to attach to my camera to make this happen? i have a thing that screws on my camera so i can attach things that are 55mm.
i have been searching around and thought i would post here also.

I was able to get a full screen image of the moon using:
8x optical zoom * 4x digital zoom * 2x external zoom lens = 64x zoom.
What made my picture poor was the 4x digital zoom. But it did let me know how much magnification it took.

I have had good luck using eye peice projection and an 8 inch newtonian telescope

you will need some type of teleconverter lens, probablly a 1.5x or 1.7x (maybe a 2.x if they can be found). Or a small spotter scope, and use eyepiece projection to get nice detail on the moon.
lets look at the zoom factor a little bit which can confuse a lot of people...
your camera the Oly C-3020Z has a wide angle of 32mm and a telephoto of 96mm , divide the long end by the wide end and you get your x factor of 3x zoom.
your camera has a 2.5x digital zoom which will take your camera out to a total of 5.5 x or 176mm.
digital zoom can induce a lot of noise and CA into your images, so its best not to use it.
now to get a good photo of the moon to show a lot of detail you need at least 200mm, for better detail you need 400+mm
200mm on your camera will equal 6.25x
400mm will = 12.5x
as I said before its best to obtail the x power optically and not digitally.

You'll probably need to use a telescope with adapter in order to get a good shot.
Even with my Olympus C-750UZ and TCON-17, this is all managed to get (with some cropping):
