I'm working on improving post production work on my photos, and would appriciate a critique on this photo.

This morning I took an interesting picture of my dog. She was watching at a squirrel up a tree. It was just after sunrise and the sun was being filtered through the trees.

Editing I did in Paint.NET:
Cloned out a scar on her face, some dust and white hairs, and some excess catch lights in her eye. Selectivly upped saturation in her eye. On the whole picture upped saturation slightly, adjusted curves (slight high contrast s-curve) & unsharp mask (Paint.NET Sharpen+ Plugin, Amount 178, Radius 1, Threshold 0, Bright Borders 71, Dark Borders 100). Cropped off right side for 1.25:1 aspect ratio (8x10 print). Resized for web as last step.

What do you like, don't you like and/or what you would do differently?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The difference is very very subtle. I don't notice any cloning or scars, I just notice a slight colour difference.

The scar is on her muzzle, just below her nose. It is plainly visible on the unedited one.

Shorty,

I think to do a fair comparison of the two images you should present the images in the same size and crop. Other than the improvement to the eye, the rest was not noticeable.

Here's a quick edit I did-

Basically just boosted the contrast qith curves, burned and convolved the background, then did a gaussian blur overlay layer that I colorized sepia, and adjusted the opacity.

What a lovely puppy :) And I certainly identify with this pose and squirrels!

I like Lanndon's blurred background but not the blurred ears. Otherwise I think you did just fine, Shorty.

I like the change in the background. The fir on her face and around her wiskers have become badly pixelated though (because of editing not at original resolution?).

Could you explain what you did for:
(1) burned and convolved the background (understand what Burn is, but not 'Convolved')
(2) then did a gaussian blur overlay layer that I colorized sepia

Here is the unedited one with the same crop as the edited one:


Flipping back and forth between this one and the edited one makes the cloned items (although small), noticable.
